Opus East's rendering of the 100 M Street office tower, a 240,000 sq ft project with an estimated completion date of late 2008. (Rendering from the project web site.)
100 M Street Office Development

Three projects are currently under development on Square 0743N: at the corner of 1st and M, Opus East is building a 240,000-sq-ft office building with 13,000 sq ft of ground-floor retail; behind that, at 1st and L, Faison Enterprises and Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds are developing Onyx on First, a 14-story, 266-unit apartment tower. Demolition started in September 2006, and delivery is expected in late 2008. Also in the planning stages is 1111 New Jersey Ave., a 220,000-sq-ft 12-floor office building by Donohoe. And in late 2007, news came out that St. Matthew's Church at 1105 New Jersey agreed to sell its property to Ruben Companies.

Looking from the southwest at the 1st and M intersection, in August 2006. (08/06)

The same location, under construction. 100 M is the building in the forefront; Onyx on First is at rear. (12/29/08)  Click to see all available photos of this location.

Square 743N, seen from overhead, in March 2006; St. Matthew's Baptist Church is at bottom, the parking lot is the 1111 New Jersey site, and the Onyx lot is at the right rear of the block. (03/06)

The same location, two years later, with 100 M (left) and Onyx (right) a few months from completion; 1111 New Jersey could start construction at lower left in 2008. At the very top left of the photo you can see the stadium. (11/17/08)  Click to see all available photos of this location.

A one-block-away view of the 100 M site, this time standing at Cushing and M and looking to the northeast. (02/06)

The same location (backed up a bit), almost complete. (12/07/08) Click to see all available photos of this location.

Looking west along M Street from between New Jersey Avenue and First Street, in February 2006. The low-rise white building at center is the On Luck Cafeteria, marking the corner of the 100 M site. (05/06)

The same location, almost complete. (Note also 20 M now completed down the street.) (5/26/08) Click to see all available photos of this location.

100 M is quite easily seen as one looks up First Street from the Frederick Douglass Bridge. (6/5/08)

The construction of Onyx and 100 M is visible from inside the Nationals ballpark, although the parking garages and other nearby construction have obscured the view. (8/3/08) Click to see all available photos of this location.

The On Luck Cafeteria held out at 1st and M for a long time.... (05/04)

But the owner accepted a purchase offer of $4.5 million in February 2006, and in September of that year On Luck (and the Zohery Bus Tours garage beside it) was demolished. Now 100 M has taken over the landscape. (8/24/08)

A cropped photo from Sept. 2000 showing the corner of 1st and M; note that past On Luck and the "Auto Wholesale" sign is a rowhome, standing alone. This is on that triangle of property next to the alley that Opus East was unable to buy; the structure was demolished sometime before 2003. (09/00)
