Photographic evidence that excavation is indeed underway, having started in early 2019.
The northeast corner of 2nd and M in August 2003, the same angle as seen in the rendering above. The boarded-up gas station was torn down one month later. The red brick building at left is an Arthur Capper apartment
block, which was demolished in early 2005. (08/03)

now occupying the north half of the block . The Capper buildings on this block were demolished in January, 2005, and the USDOT HQ
has risen at the end of 2nd Street, across M Street.
