What's New and Notable Outside the Ballpark Since Last Season
Updated April 2014 | What Was New in 2013, 2012

If you haven't been keeping track of the latest neighborhood news since the 2013 season ended, here's the headlines:

Latest Food and Entertainment News

The Boilermaker Shops hit critical mass in the fall of 2013 first with the opening of Nando's Peri-Peri, followed late in the year by the blockbuster arrival of Bluejacket Brewery and its Arsenal restaurant, along with Buzz Bakery. Expected in 2014 are 100 Montaditos and (maybe, maybe not?) Willie's Brew and 'Que.
The Lumber Shed at the Yards Park debuted in late 2013, as did Osteria Morini and Agua 301. (And Yards developer Forest City moved in upstairs.) Plus, Ice Cream Jubilee is coming, along with perhaps a southern food restaurant. And, Nicoletta Pizzeria is supposed to be coming to the boardwalk.
Residents are watching the mid-2014 completion of construction of the Twelve12 apartment building at 4th and Tingey because Harris Teeter and Vida Fitness will be there, but fans looking for pre-game eats will like seeing Sweetgreen and TaKorean open their doors.
Half Street north of Nats Park hasn't yet become the destination people were hoping for, but a small step forward is coming this summer when beer and brats place The Big Stick opens at 20 M. And a Subway Cafe is coming, too.
See the Food Options Map for exact locations.
Don't forget the other options, in Southwest (Z-Burger, Station 4) and along Barracks Row.

New Residential Under Construction

Twelve12, the first new apartment building in the 'hood since 2009 is nearing completion at 4th and M, SE, though its 218 units share equal billing with the Harris Teeter and Vida Fitness/Bang Salon/Aura Spa/Penthouse Pool Club that will open in 2014.
If you haven't been to Justin's Cafe since last season, be prepared for a towering new neighbor. The River Parc by Toll Brothers has sprouted quickly, and will be offering 277 rental apartments when leasing begins later in 2014.
If you're walking down from Capitol South, you might be surprised to see the 432-unit Park Chelsea apartment building totally remaking the vista along New Jersey Avenue. The building is expected to be completed in early 2015.
There probably won't be much evidence this season beyond a hole in the ground, but a 327-unit apartment building is just getting underway on the southwest corner of 4th and Tingey at the Yards. The project, with 20,000 square feet of retail, is expected to be finished in early 2016.
Construction should start Any Minute Now on the Lofts at Capitol Quarter, a 195-unit mixed-income apartment building that's part of the Capper redevelopment. Unfortunately for Nats fans, it will mean the loss of about half of Economy Lot W.
It isn't coming until probably 2017, but the news rocked the neighborhood that Whole Foods signed a lease in a residential building, getting underway in March on New Jersey Avenue just south of the freeway. In case you want to pick up some quinoa on your way to the ballpark.

Other Items of Note in the Offing

The empty blocks immediately north of Nats Park have been a sore point, but some progress will be made as construction has begun on a 168-room Hampton Inn on the northwest corner of 1st and N. Speaking of hotels, Homewood Suites should be coming to 50 M Street in 2016.
Few will lament the loss of spooky Building 213 at the corner of 1st and M as it slowly gets demolished in 2014, but Forest City is planning to build a temporary park, which at the least will make the walk from the Metro entrance at New Jersey and M a little less crowded.
Some difficulties in moving existing DC Water operations have gummed things up a bit, but in a few years a 16-screen movie theater could be coming to a block just east of Nats Park, along with eventually 600 residential units and retail.
Families in the neighborhood had long hoped for the news, and in 2013 it was announced the city earmarked $9.8 million to renovate Van Ness Elementary School at 5th and M, with a target reopening for the 2015-16 school year.
