Construction at the Waterfront Park at the Yards
March 1, 2010
First, a nighttime rendering of the park, to help orient the construction photos. Note that the renovation of the Lumber Shed, the other two new retail pavilions, and the marina are not part of the park's first phase of construction. A more detailed schematic of the park's design can be seen here.
A close-up of the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Canal Basin.
The bridge, not quite ready to be crossed.
Another view of the bridge, seen from below, standing on what will be the boardwalk between the Canal Basin and the Overlook.
The Overlook, seen from below, with the Lumber Shed peeking out from behind.
Looking west from the Overlook, at the Canal Basin and bridge, with Nationals Park a few blocks in the distance.
Looking down the Anacostia from the Overlook, toward the Douglass Bridge.
The Overlook itself, with Poplar Point and the Display Ship Barry in the distance.
Looking across the eastern portion of the park from the Overlook, toward the Navy Yard and the Barry.
Construction on what will be stairs from the Overlook down to the water's edge, with the Canal Basin area getting dug out.
Standing at the front of the Canal Basin, at the foot of Third Street, SE, looking at the bridge.
For orientation's sake, here's the view from just to the north of the Overlook and the bridge, standing next to the basin, looking north at the USDOT site.
The Overlook as seen from its eastern side.
To the east of the Overlook will be an area of grassy ledges stepping down to the water's edge. You can see the beginnings of the grading here.
The Lumber Shed, in the process of being de-skinned. However, its transformation into a glass-enclosed retail pavilion won't happen until the park's second phase.
Two views from what will be the boardwalk along the water's edge, first looking west toward Nationals Park....
... And then east toward the Navy Yard.
A final zoom in on the pedestrian bridge, with Nationals Park looming a few blocks to the west.
