The northwest corner of 8th and L, in March 2011. This is 720 L St SE, where a developer is working to build a beer garden, that would seat 99 customers inside, another 200 outside in a "summer garden," and would have outdoor roof space as well. The bar would have a tavern-class liquor license (supported by ANC 6B, albeit with some reservations) that would allow hours of operation of 11 am to 1 am Sunday through Thursday and 11 am to 3 am Friday and Saturday, along with additional hours for both indoor and outdoor entertainment. The current timeline appears to be working toward a 2011 opening, though the site's location within the Capitol Hill Historic District has caused some delays as it became necessary for a permanent structure to be built, which then needed to go through the Historic Preservation Review process. A March 2011 rendering showing the latest design for the beer garden building. With its historic district location, the new building must respect the historic nature of the area, but does not need to be a direct copy of Hill style or architecture; so the developer has gone with a more industrial design that is not out of place for this area near the Navy Yard. An earlier design of the building presented to ANC 6B and to the Historic Preservation Review Board, was thought to be "somewhat chaotic and unfinished," and in comparing it to the later rendering you can see how some of the more disparate elements were removed. (3/19/11)
