South Capitol Street Corridor

Revamping the southern approach to the US Capitol has been the subject of many studies, culminating in the 2008 South Capitol Street Environmental Impact Statement. The EIS (expected to be given the thumbs up in 2009) envisions South Capitol as a six-lane boulevard with a median and wide sidewalks for pedestrians and bikes, and marked by a new Douglass Bridge, a new large traffic oval at Potomac Avenue, and improvements to the interchanges with I-395, M Street, and I-295 on the east side of the Anacostia River. The 2008 Draft EIS put total costs for the project in the $500 million-$800 million range, depending on which alternatives are chosen.

Meanwhile, in late 2008, the city council approved legislation to rename the portion between N Street and Potomac Avenue SE (alongside Nationals Park) "Taxation Without Representation Street."

Plans and Photos            1345 South Capitol            South Capitol Street News Items

(Don't tell anybody that I'm actually watching a project in Southwest, but it fronts South Capitol Street, so I'm relenting.)

A rendering of 1345 South Capitol Street, a 244-unit residential building under development by Camden. The site was cleared in late 2007; however, as of spring 2008 work is stopped while Camden "decides what to do." (Rendering from the WDG Architecture web site.)

Looking at the 1345 lot, from the ballpark, at O Street, the same angle as in the above rendering. (5/26/08)

The 1300 block of South Capitol Street, in Southwest, in November 2006, as seen from across South Capitol at O Street, a similar angle as the above rendering. (11/06)

The same location, demolished. (8/3/08) Click to see all available photos of this location.

The viewing platforms at the ballpark provide a good view of the 1345 site, seen at right in September 2007, soon after the reopening of South Capitol Street, with streetscape work still underway. (9/07)

The same location, with the 1345 lot cleared but work on hold. (5/26/08)

The 1345 footprint stands directly across South Capitol Street from the new Nationals ballpark site; the beige building at left in the top photo is on the 1345 footprint; it was demolished in December 2007. You might be able to make out the stadium construction at right. (8/3/08) Click to see all available photos of this location.

The northern section of the project site, still in operation as a taxi garage, in October 2006. (10/06)

All gone. (12/27/07)
