I continue to shirk my duties here, as I am still spending vast amounts of time on the COVID-19 Numbers beat for the Post. But I wanted to post some links if you haven't yet found them on where to keep up with the current status of things, including what's open, what might be open, what could be opening, etc.
The Capitol Riverfront BID has a listing all of the open restaurants and how you can patronize them, and has a similar one for neighborhood retail outlets.
Charles Allen's Twitter feed provides Ward 6 news and guidance (and is also reminding you to return your census questionnaire and also to request your DC vote by mail ballot by May 26).
You can read the daily coronavirus updates from the DC government and look at all of their data viz on case demographics, etc.
You can also read the latest news and dig into current case and death numbers for the DMV with the Post's local tracker, (shameless plug since it's my work that gets the numbers into it)
Plus, you can read the JDLand comments threads, as readers continue on-the-ground reports while I remain deeply involved in my Numbers Racket.
And you can wear masks and avoid indoor gatherings so that we can get a smidge further down the road to whatever the next phase will be.
With that, I return you to your holiday weekend, and I will return to the numbers. Stay safe, everyone.

My fingers are crossed for the neighborhood, which I have not seen since mid-March but will this week. In Old Town today, there was a growing number of vacated storefronts from places that have already closed for good.

@walt - that is news to the JDland comments. Sad to hear that, if it's permanent. The website and twitter make it sound like it's a temporary closure, but removing signage seems a bit drastic vs merely covering the windows. So we'll see. As for the business, I visited once and always meant to go back because the juice was very good. But, it was a bit out of the way from my regular lunch time walking route and so that never happened.

@walt: Good to know I’m not alone in my New FDMB geekdom. I, too, want to watch the final piece of the final arch get installed.

You’ve probably noticed that completion of the fourth (of the six) arches is taking forever. Its final piece has been sitting in wait for a month. I finally got close enough to a construction worker today to ask why. He said the alignment of the currently unfinished arch is not within tolerance and that some work on one or more of the pieces is necessary to ensure an acceptable fit of the final piece.

@CL85 I witnessed a motor vehicle theft in front of Bonchon on K St a few nights ago. Poor delivery guy left the car running and I only caught the last seconds of the theft. Luckily, I was able to tell police which way he went. WaPo had reporting this week on an increase of cars of delivery drivers being stolen.

The substance of the article doesn't add clarity to whether Half St SE will or won't be permanently closed to vehicle traffic. But the main rendering picture has a couple structures halfway down that look possibly permanent and look like they'd obstruct traffic? I know, I'm just looking for any indication that supports the conclusion I want, but one can hope!

I walked down Half Street on Friday. There are DEFINITELY poles in place for lights to be strung across/above the street. The work is on going so it is hard to tell the full extent of the lights but the poles are in place from N Street to the alley in the middle of the block.

Though the windows were boarded up, the door was propped open when I walked by the new liquor store next to Bonchon yesterday and I could see the shelves were stocked with product, so I think an opening is imminent.

I talked to one of the contractors on Half Street yesterday and he mentioned that it was indeed pedestrian only (I think this has been mentioned previously). Also, there was zero chance (even without covid) that Half St would have been completed by opening day.

Rooftop dog park. Ground floor retail/restaurant space. Major ground level controlled-access inner courtyard portrayed as “public” space. Details will emerge here soon as JD has her ways of getting developers to cough up pics or else.

Interesting news - I wish there was a little more information on the parcel the Navy has in mind, although I understand keeping that information close to the vest until/unless a deal is finalized. Hopefully it's still JDLand territory (could be a nice segue from the actual Navy Yard to the planned bridge park?). In any event, I've heard the museum really is worthwhile, so it should be in a more accessible location.

This is such exciting news! We haven’t gotten any updates from Laura since early April so was wondering on the progress. So if you’re doing walkthroughs and settlement I guess they have their COA? We’re on the 6th floor and hoping mid-July.

From what I understand, they still don't have Certificates of Occupancy (apparently, it's a slow going process) but they want to get the walk-thrus out of the way. @jscott280. Walk-thru went well. I heard "mid-July and possibly a few in early July". Interestingly, I walked into the Kelvin on Sunday (didn't realize they were open for over a month). I was just curious when they would finish their rooftop, to see if there was any indication of when ours would be completed. She said the entire building was not completed and that the crews are still working, based on the floors that are being occupied. Their rooftop is supposed to be done by 4 July. This made me assume that our building doesn't have to be completely finished for us to move in...but who knows. One can always hope!

Sasq: Our Bower experience informs me that the entire building need not be finished in order for the COA to be issued or move-ins to start. Bower COA: Dec 2018. First closings and move-ins: Feb 2019. Many upper floor units were being finished for several months thereafter.

Sasq and Jscott280: Ok, I'm revising my July estimate and now just hoping for before Labor Day. For the walk through, did you see any major issues? Did you have a third party inspector come? This is our first new construction purchase which is much different.

And thanks CJBabyDaddy! That confirms what I thought too. We are on 6 and they told us that floors 2-5 would be completed and moved in likely before we close.

@sasq @AGH. I did not have a inspector for my walkthrough. In general, the building/unit seemed very well built. The only issues I had were minor blemishes with paint and punch out items (dents..etc). In the future, lets create an envy (hopefully) owners groupme so we dont take over jdland with envy (i hate that name) talk.

I did not get my own inspector. Most things were minor (caulking, paint touch ups, uneven shelf, w/d not level) but I did find however, that my junction box in the living room was off center and was told that they could not change it because the ceiling is concrete....(so either come drunk or tilt your head when enter my place!!!!)

The GNC on Tingey Street is closing. I am sorry for the employees who are losing their jobs but I hope that there can be better retail at that location that helps encourage a vibrant streetscape.

Serious workplace accident on the ground this morning at the Chemonics construction site. One worker clearly suffered life-threatening physical trauma. Hoping for the best. Another worker appeared to suffer a much less serious knee injury.

Some interesting design notes found in the approved building permit for the three CSX East buildings under construction:

Owner: GREYSTAR GP LLC / Applicant: KIM MITCHELL
NA / NEW BUILDING / CONSTRUCTION
The proposed project is three structures which are connected by a shared below-grade garage, which is one story deep on the east half of the site and two stories deep on the west half of the site. Two structures will be residential, with a total of 756 units, and the third will be a 225-key hotel. The west residential structure (Building 3) is planned to be 13 stories with ground and roof level amenity space. The central residential structure (Building 2) is planned to be 12 stories in height, with office space on the 2nd and 3rd floors which will be accessed through a separate lobby and core. The hotel structure (Building 1) will be 11 stories in height. Bridges at the second floor will connect all three structures on the site into one building and an additional bridge at the 11th floor will connect hotel Building 1 to the existing 82 Eye Street, which is directly south of the site. A sky bridge at the roof level will provide an open-air connection between the two residential buildings.

Okay Commentariat, I need to put up a new post, but obviously my brain remains elsewhere. So, I'm putting you to work. Give me bullet points of what you think are the biggest news items of the past month or so. The items can be retail openings, closings, traffic news (aka bus lanes), and news of residential openings, new names, web sites, etc., or anything else. But it has to have a link to a primary source.

This is basically the first time since 2003 I've ever asked such a thing of readers, but I continue to be working seven days a week and just can't summon the brain power to bring a JDLand post together after missing so much.

By the time I regularly resume trips to JD Land, I wonder how much of the retail landscape will have changed?

Speaking of that, I originally assumed that the pandemic would spell doom for almost all of the restaurants with folks like myself working from home and not in the neighborhood 9-5. But, then I realized that there are more people who live in JD Land than work there 9-5 and they are likely now working at home too and patronizing local restaurants for many meals. I suppose the worst-hit areas would be places like midtown DC, where the 9-5 workers are all working at home and there is not a large base of residents patronizing businesses as they also work at home.

jdc, it's going to be super interesting to see how the retail landscape changes. I think that some of the restaurants in JD Land might be set up for tread water with carry-out (and the ability to order cocktails certainly helps, and should remain), but others not so much. The more I learn about the business models at play in the restaurant industry, the more I realize I should not go into the restaurant business other than as a customer!
