 Sliding from Before to After

I imagine news of restaurant arrivals will begin to ramp up as Opening Day nears, especially with the lineup of new places coming to Half Street. In the meantime, here's some preseason tidbits:
* ALBI OPENING FEB. 20: Thursday sees the opening of Albi, the new restaurant from Chef Michael Rafidi promising "a new perspective on traditional Levantine cuisine." City Paper has a preview, and the menu is online. Sibling wine bar Maxwell Park will open in March, according to a press release, and there will also be a daytime cafe space called "Yellow" (I am curious!) nestled in between the two spaces, coming later in the spring. Chef Rafidi was previously executive chef of Arroz and Requin. The address is 1346 4th Street, SE, in the ground floor of the Guild apartment building at the Yards.
* FIVE OF THE VERY BEST: Washingtonian's annual 100 Very Best Restaurants list is out, and the neighborhood clocks in with five entries: All-Purpose at #22, Chloe at #35, Osteria Morini at #59, Hatoba in a joint entry at #65, and ABC Pony at #71.
* EMMY SQUARED? The exact location of the second DC outlet of the trendy Detroit pizza shop from New York has been rumored to be at the Bower at 4th and Tingey, and while there is still no announcement, this week's DC Register includes the announcement of an alcohol beverage license application for an unnamed restaurant at 1300 4th Street SE serving pizza and sandwiches. So...?

I’m still salty about the Cap Riv BID press release last year that placed Albi “at the corner of 4th & Tingey” and “in the Guild apartment building,“ when the Bower is at that corner, and the Guild is down the street. Makes me wonder what location a half-block away from 4th & Tingey the BID‘s press release is gonna assign to the Unnamed Pizza Place Coming To The Corner Of 4th & Tingey when UPPCTTCO4&T decides it’s ready to be outed.

All that aside, I’m ready to get my grub on at Albi on the 20th.

The Washingtonian rankings.... well 1st off Dabney has to be paying them off 2 years in a row ranked 1 and 2?! They are good but like top 20-25 good ... i feel like the paper does a decent job at picking good restaurants but then puts all 100 names in a hat to rank them. I would be curious to see if places can pay to have their rank increased.... Little inn at washington is 11? Pineapple and Pearls, arguably the best imho is at 9? Mini bar is 16!?!?! Phhhheww gunna have to walk over this rage.... *rant over*

Any news on Half Street between M and N? I've heard that it's being turned into a pedestrian only thoroughfare, which makes sense to me.

@Jason - not sure if that is the plan, but it would be nice. I went by there this weekend and it is completely torn up; they have plenty of work to do prior to opening day.

At 37 L, windows are going in and tower crane is gone. At Chiller site next door, some preliminary digging is now underway.

Fences up around parcel H. They are going to change the ingress points to N place from N street. After that, construction will started on Parcel I.

Navy Yard is served by the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station on the Green Line. According to Capitol Riverfront BID President Michael Stevens, there are plans for a third station entrance to relieve congestion on the platforms. (Astrid Riecken/For The Washington Post).... saw this in a wapo article on navy yard. Where would the 3 metro entrance be?

"As I spend a glorious late spring day reading the Office of Planning setdown report for Forest City's request for additional building height allowances in Yards West, my eyes lit up at this paragraph, in reference to the "Parcel A" site where Building 213 is currently in its final days:
"Finally, the site is located about a block east of one entrance to the Navy Yard Metro station, and across M Street from the west entrance[.] Both entrances can be quite congested, particularly during rush hours and on baseball stadium game/event days. WMATA has indicated a desire to increase capacity and convenience to passengers by providing an additional entrance to the Navy Yard Metro station on the south side of M Street on Parcel A. To faciliate this, OP is proposing that, as part of Zoning Commission review of any development on Parcel A, facilitation in the site and building design for a new entrance be provided - this would not require [Forest City Washington], the developer, to provide the new entrance, but rather would ensure that any construction on the site would accommodate this additional entrance.""

I know we will not get one, but to me another entrance on north side of M St. in vicinity of Half St. would be great. As the great divide by the current configuration of S. Capitol is lessened with a boulevard, I would also think that the walkshed for Navy Yard entrance would increase and an entrance on the western side of S. Capitol would be beneficial.

Would the new entrance come with its own set of turnstiles or would it just provide an additional escalator that ultimately merges with the other M and New Jersey entrance before the turnstiles? I'm guessing the latter because that seems much easier to construct, but the former would ease congestion much more since the turnstiles are a major choke point.

@caphillguy: The turnstiles may be a chokepoint for chumps like you and me, but apparently not for many of our neighbors who simply walk through the gates adjacent to the kiosk fully confident that the station managers looking at them have decided that fare evasion doesn’t occur if you pretend not to see it.

That is a shame. I appreciated the changing menu and never had a bad meal, but the service was always SO slow. I bet the influx of new options in JD Land really cut into the volume of patrons.

A good portion of Metro chiller site's building has been torn down. Does anyone know if the plans call for the 2 chillers to remain in operation during construction, i.e. to provide cooling at our local stop? That was my impression, but they certainly hacked away at the building in a pretty indiscriminate manner.

JD - I took a street-level photo and I'll get one from 1015 Half St, too, for the archive.
