Page Through from Before to After

The new Frederick Douglass Bridge has been under construction for not quite 11 months, but the showy phase of the project has now arrived, as the beginnings of what will be its signature arches sprouted up within the past few weeks.
Anyone who walks along the Anacostia, or spends time across the way at Buzzard Point, or drives on South Capitol Street south of P, has been watching the progress of the three sets of arches, but of course the JDLand camera wanted to officially document this new stage.
For the record, it's not just from the Riverwalk that these arches will be visible--I caught of glimpse of them from the intersection of at 3rd and I Streets, SE, and I wouldn't be surprised to have the bridge be visible from multiple other locations as it is completed, since the bridge crosses the Anacostia at a southwesterly angle.
As 2020 marches on, the work on the two traffic ovals will get underway, and in fact there is a fence up across the First Base Gate promenade that I think bears some resemblance to where the northeast edge of the oval will eventually be.
Completion is expected in 2021.

I'm pretty psyched about this project. In the first instance, I like the design of the bridge. But primarily, I like how the lower height will result in less dead space on the shoreline. Combined with the traffic circles, I'm hopeful that it at least help ties together southeast and southwest DC on the west side of the river, if not both sides.

As a cyclist that works down here, I'm most excited for easy access to the east bank of the Anacostia trail. It's lovely biking over there and having the new bridge will give me several great options for crossing from the west bank trail to the east bank trail. The old bridge was awful for cyclists/pedestrians.

At the ribbon-cutting, in honor of its namesake, I hope the Mayor cranks up a Chuck Brown go-go classic and designates JD to lead everyone in doing the Dougie.

Will the ovals really be called ovals? A round of beers if Google maps ever says "turn right at the second turn in the traffic oval"

A large construction trailer has appeared on the old GSA warehouse site. Not clear which construction site the trailer is tied to.

Awesome, thanks JNB. I had not realized that request had been approved to go forward (otherwise I may have been able to piece it together).

Here is another question for the knowledgeable folks of JDLand - are there any buildings in the area that do NOT allow pets, or at least do not allow dogs? To be clear, I am in the 'no pets, especially no dogs' category when it comes to living in large buildings.

I'm fairly new to living in JDLand, but I live right at that intersection. What is the background on the need for a stoplight there? Evening rush hour down NJ?

conngs0 says: (1/24/20 10:43 AM)
GaryRKarr, I think there are just several times per day when there are so many cyclists and pedestrians moving through the intersection that motorists get impatient and try to squeeze through. As unfortunate as it is that the masses can't handle a four-way stop, it's a recipe for disaster and the traffic light will hopefully create some order. Add in some enforcement of double parking around there and perhaps the intersection will even operate smoothly!

CJBabyDaddy says: (1/24/20 11:34 AM)
conngs0: Enforcement of double parking? Are you today’s JDLand resident comedian, a raving optimist, or both?
