 Sliding from Before to After

Late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, many readers noticed police activity and caution tape outside of Scarlet Oak at New Jersey and K, SE. According to the MPD 1-D mailing list, a person got into a "dispute" with a group of people and that person was subsequently assaulted by the group. The person is apparently in the hospital. That's the latest as of this writing.
Now, rounding up a week's worth of tidbits:
* DC WATER OPEN HOUSE: DC Water is throwing an open house to mark the "grand opening" of its sparkling headquarters along the Anacostia, on Thursday, May 30, starting at 3 pm. But be sure to not stay so long that you miss the ice cream social/JDLand camera meet-and-greet that starts at 6 pm at Canal Park.
* HELLO, MERIDIAN: The apartment building under construction at 1000 1st Street SE now has a name and a placeholder web site, so say hello to Meridian on First.
* SOMEWHERE, ALMOST HERE: Washington City Paper reports on the arrival later this month of "Somewhere," the combination clothing-and-coffee venture from the DC native behind Maketto and streetwear brand DURKL coming to the retail row on 1st Street SE south of M.
* CFA VS CHEMONICS HQ: The Commission on Fine Arts does not like the design for the planned Chemonics headquarters at New Jersey and Tingey. Really, really does not like it. (WBJ)
* REMEMBERING TRACKS: Marty Chernoff, the creator of the legendary Tracks nightclub that ruled the northwest corner of 1st and M Streets, SE, from 1984 to 1999, died on May 3. The Washington Blade printed a nice remembrance of both Chernoff and Tracks, and subsequently a reader pointed me to two YouTube videos from 1998 and 1999 touring the club.

And, not really tidbit worthy, but if you've seen the street-level activity at 300 M (new entrance carved out) and are thinking that it's going to be retail, it's not. Building permit: "INSTALL NEW FIRST FLOOR SUITE ENTRY DOOR WITH CARD READER TO VACANT TENANT SPACE. INSTALL INTERIOR CONCRETE RAMP WITH 4 INCH ELEVATION CHANGE. PROVIDE EXIT LIGHT AND EXTERIOR LIGHT FIXTURE. 100 SQUARE FEET."

OH BOY!!!! Free cake at the DC Water open house and free ice cream at the JD Land meet & greet!

Any updates on the neighborhood's second CVS?!?!?!?!?!

RMP says: (5/16/19 12:34 PM)
I'm still not sure what The Sun Deck is, but they put up barbed wire around the perimeter so they really don't want people going in there right now.

walt says: (5/16/19 2:37 PM)
The address for the DC Water open house is 1385 Canal Street SE. Is there a Canal Street in SE?

The Flyer also says Entry is across the street from the Trapeze School. Do they mean the little trailer in the gravel lot?

walt says: (5/16/19 2:52 PM)
I know ZERO about architecture, so I wanted to see if I could identify why someone would "really, really loathe" a building design. I just don't see it.

Here's what someone more hifalutin said about it:
"I'm going to say something that may sound insulting, so I apologize ahead of time," he said. "I think that your architectural speak is far more advanced than your staff's ability to manipulate form. I mean, you sounded eloquent, but this seems like a jumble of forms."

While it does seem like a jumble of forms, it's far more interesting than any of the large box-like structures surrounding the area. And it seems to provide a lot of public space on the sidewalks as well as a lot of roof space for residents. I actually am intrigued by this jumble of forms. I do not like the brick color though. :(

Amen Walt. I loved the look of the building when it was first revealed, and I still do.

Looks like a hipster type food market coming this summer:

Great find, GG! My family is coming back home for a week this summer and we’re going to eat our way through TNNTNY.

Hey JD— do you know anything about a shooting at Canal Park last night? We heard several police vehicles and a a police helicopter around 10:30-11 last night.

There is nothing on the MPD listserve or Twitter yet.

JD says: (5/17/19 8:49 AM)
There was something happening on Pennsylvania Avenue about that time.

bryan says: (5/17/19 11:04 AM)
About 10 police cars went racing up New Jersey Ave towards the capitol, so whatever happened appeared to be north of the freeway.

Shogungts says: (5/17/19 2:08 PM)
@202, JD and bryan,

There was a robbery at We The Pizza last night which I am pretty sure is what the helicopter and police cars were about:

Shogungts says: (5/17/19 2:14 PM)
I agree with Walt on the color of the bricks for Chemonics being bad (maybe if the first level was that color and then the rest was a different color and/or metal like Bower)

And I don't understand how someone could not like the the design of that building, but approve the monstrosity that is Park Chelsea.

(oops, image URL included with this comment didn't work!)

Shogungts says: (5/17/19 2:15 PM)
Trying to post the picture again...

jdc says: (5/18/19 1:19 PM)
The Park Chelsea definitely is a weird looking building. But, it does stand out.

JD says: (5/18/19 3:55 PM)
Members of the commentariat, the bar for offerings has now been set pretty high by one of your peers.

NavyYardRes says: (5/19/19 10:39 AM)
yellow brick must have a lower price point per brick.

Shogungts says: (5/19/19 11:39 AM)
@NavyYardRes - Ha!

I am not a fan of yellow brick and hate the DC areas seeming obsession with sandstone colored buildings as it is (thankfully that seems to be subsiding), but when you don't add anything to contrast it - belch.

Even if they had made the window frames darker or added a couple rows of darker bricks every now and then - something to break up the visual monotony.

Capyardsres says: (5/19/19 1:17 PM)
How do we get a Wawa in the Navy Yard? Do we cry? Do we beg? I’m open to ideas here.

CJBabyDaddy says: (5/19/19 3:40 PM)
Only the United States Navy can approve the operation of a WaWa in the Navy Yard. If it did, then only active duty personnel and authorized civilians could patronize it.

Did I JD that properly, JD?

JD says: (5/19/19 4:36 PM)
@CJ, you beat me to it!

Gamble Rogers says: (5/19/19 8:50 PM)
@Capyardres

Try this:

“How do we get a Wawa in the The Neighborhood Next to the Navy Yard (TNNTTNY)? Do we cry? Do we beg? I’m open to ideas here.”

Should do the trick!

@JD

Do you have an in with the Coca-Cola people... like a descendant of Ty Cobb? Amazing!

JD says: (5/20/19 8:54 AM)
Also, I sent this to @DDOTDC on Twitter yesterday.
