 Sliding from Before to After

A big change in neighborhood transit arrives today, as the new "Eastern Market-L'Enfant Plaza" (EM-LP) Circulator route begins service. While the new line means riders can no longer take a single bus from Union Station to M Street, or get on/off at 1st and K SE, the tradeoff is a route that connects Near Capitol Ballpark River Yards to the Wharf and then continues up to L'Enfant Plaza. (And then comes all the way back, of course.)
It runs from 6 am to 9 pm on summer weekdays, and 7 am to 9 pm on summer weekends, with hours extended to midnight on days of Nationals home games starting at 6 pm or later.
(As for special routes and service on DC United game days, this is going around Twitter, but I don't see it on the Circulator web site. It would apparently detour down 1st Street SE to Potomac Avenue, then back up Half Street SW.)
Meanwhile, on Monday DDOT is "beginning roadway improvements along M Street SE from First Street to 7th Street SE." This will be milling and paving, and will be done between 8 pm and 5 am "to mitigate impact on traffic in this busy corridor." Like on shiny new bus routes!
And now I think it's probably time to head back into tidbit mode, unless big news breaks. Watch the bottom of this post for updates, but here's two tidbits to start that you might not have seen:
* An interesting article on the new Douglass Bridge's design and planned construction from an engineering standpoint.
* With all of those photos I took last week, it was time to update the Sliders, and I also took the opportunity to add a bunch of new angles to the Slider lineup. I can't embed them here, but here are screenshots that you can click on to see the sliding in action. Or you can scroll down through all 35 sliders that I updated/added, as well as browse the full archive.

JD— you’re going to make my wife’s blood boil with this post. We’re going to have to ride the Lime scooters now to Union Station now when we want to catch our train.

202_cyclist says: (6/24/18 1:59 PM)
Also, with the new dog park across the street from Whole Foods (opening fall 2025) we’d better not step in any more dog crap. You got that, dog owners?

JD says: (6/24/18 2:00 PM)
Or change Circulators at Eastern Market. There's still one that goes to Union Station from there.

RMP says: (6/24/18 4:25 PM)
Those of us over on the east-side of the neighborhood can walk over to 8th St to catch Circulator to Union Station. Overall this change seems like a positive. Now all the people from the Politico article can more easily visit each other (kidding). I hope it works out.

In Eastern Market news, that Sephora has an opening date of 7/13/18. My wife plans to be their first customer. Why was that light years ahead of *you know what?*

I might actually use the Circulator if I need to go to Arena Stage or the Wharf. Cool.

202_cyclist says: (6/25/18 9:17 AM)
Admittedly it is SWTLQTC Land but we went to the Field House to watch the World Cup on Saturday. It was a fun venue and I can see that becoming a destination during DC United games and as the Bullpen continues to be encroached upon.

conngs0 says: (6/25/18 10:49 AM)
Thanks for the quick review, 202! Is the Field House a viable option for pre and post Nats games as well? Or too far?

conngs0 says: (6/25/18 10:56 AM)
I have a suspicion I'm in the minority on this once since the Circulator appears to still be going strong, but it's difficult for me to understand the value of the Circulator routes that are pretty redundant to Metro's preexisting coverage of neighborhoods and/or are slower than other modes of transportation like walking or bike/scooter sharing services. Accordingly, I'd think that the "detour" down towards Buzzard Point should be a permanent part of this route since there seems to be a reason to encourage folks to travel down that way.

202_cyclist says: (6/25/18 12:16 PM)
@conngs0:

It is a about a ten minute walk (1/2 mile) from Nats Park but add another 5 minutes and a 1/4 mile since the most direct route is currently blocked by ongoing Audi Field construction. You have to walk to 2nd St, SW (next to the gate for Ft McNair) to access the Field House now. There is excellent bike infrastructure and all of the kids are riding the Lime scooters now, so accessing the Field House before Nats games is definitely feasible.

Ampersand says: (6/27/18 1:00 PM)
Woe betide those who comment on second-most-recent posts, but here I go anyway. In response to conngs0, I think a $1 Circulator is a great alternative to the Metro, even if it is redundant. Keep in mind that there are stops all along the route, not just at Metro stations, so it's more likely to get you where you are and take you where you want to go. The SW Waterfront station is actually a bit of a hike from the Wharf, and Metro fares of $2 (or $2.25 at peak) are literally double the $1 Circulator price, for similar headways. You don't have to go underground, you don't have to worry about Metro lighting on fire, you don't have to sit there in a tunnel and listen to 10 announcements that you'll be moving "momentarily". I think it's gonna be great. (And I'm glad there are no longer 8 Circulator buses idling on the block of 1st between K and L.)

Westnorth says: (6/28/18 11:25 PM)
Echoing those points, I'm very happy about the Circulator route:
- Lots of destinations are right next to the bus, but not the Metro entrances (the Wharf, Harris-Teeter are each 3 blocks, plus lots of people live either between the stations or east of 4th SE)
- Provides a one-seat ride to Barracks Row & Eastern Market, which is new for those of us in Southwest
- More regular hours
- Sometimes even I don't want to bike
- If I'm riding the train, I might as well go more than one stop
- Easier for people with reduced mobility
- Adds frequency and redundancy to the Green Line corridor

I frequently end up just missing a Green Line train and just biking to L'Enfant Plaza (work is near Farragut West). Having that extra option will be useful.

JD says: (6/28/18 11:51 PM)
I am also happy with the new route because the Wharf is just a smidge too far to walk to from my north-of-the-freeway locale, and walking to the Navy Yard Metro station to then hope a train is coming to go one stop irks me. Barracks Row is an easy walk though, and then I can have a nice ride.

202_cyclist says: (6/29/18 7:31 AM)
JD-- why aren't you riding the electric scooters?

JES says: (6/29/18 11:32 AM)
Echoing the praise for the new circulator route. The union station leg that got chopped off was borderline useless, given the windy route through Capitol complex security it had to take. You could almost walk faster than the bus from the intersection at 1st and Independence. Getting to the Wharf is much easier now, plus the 10 minute headways are better than metro at all times of day except rush hour. Gonna save a lot of money by avoiding Uber/Lyft to get there on weekends.

JD says: (6/29/18 12:08 PM)
@202--I think my hip surgeon might frown upon scooter use. Besides, I think there's an age limit, right? ("You must be this young to ride Lime Scooter...")
