4th at L, Looking South (see more)

Getting caught up on a few things after my terribly busy week of laying on the sofa rehabbing my hip:
* NAVY YARD DENTAL OPENS: Now open and accepting appointments in the ground floor of the 55 M Street office building at Half and M (the one on top of the Metro station entrance) is Navy Yard Dental, where Chad Jones, DDS is available for all your toothy needs. (Sorry I don't have a current photo. Will update with one when I get there.) But maybe don't race across the street to Shake Shack right after getting your teeth cleaned.
* BISCUITS POPPING UP: Commenter Ampersand reports that Eater DC reports that next week Ice Cream Jubilee will partner with the Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. to offer savory biscuit sandwiches and shortcake-like strawberry sundae sandwiches during afternoons through the end of May.
* CLOSING THE ROOF: The Virginia Avenue Tunnel construction team reports that the final roof panel of the entire two-tunnel project was placed this week. Still a lot of work to do, but CSX says that the project remains "on time" and expected to be completed this fall.
* SPEAKING OF CLOSINGS: I mentioned this in my last post, but that was forever ago so I'll mention again that in order for the tunnel project to continue along toward completion, CSX is expecting to temporarily close both the 4th Street and 5th/6th Street intersections next week, possibly as early as March 14. The closures are expected to last 3-4 months, and it means that the now-once-again-two-way 3rd Street will be seeing a lot of extra traffic.
* VAN NESS SILENT AUCTION: Sorry to mention this with only a day left to go before it finishes (I did mention on Twitter and Facebook, at least), but the Van Ness Elementary PTO is having a silent auction fundraiser, and among such items as tickets to see Pink, dinner at Rose's Luxury, Nats tickets, and other highly enticing offerings is the chance to take a neighborhood walking tour guided by none other than yours truly this spring. (Or, if I haven't recovered sufficiently, the chance to pull me around the neighborhood in a little red wagon.) There are ten bidding slots to win two tickets, with the bids right now ranging from $45 to $75 with 24 hours to go.

Let’s beat the deadline and support a worthy cause by making a generous bid for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get hitched up to pull the Official JDLand Little Red Wagon around the ‘hood on May 19th.

202_cyclist says: (3/12/18 1:32 PM)
The tower crane at the Garrett is a nice addition to the neighborhood.

sameter says: (3/12/18 3:52 PM)
@202 except when i was walking to work sunday morning and I street was shut down at 6am. just kidding im just bitter i had to walk further. the pace at the garrett seems to be rapid and will be above ground before we know.

Ampersand says: (3/13/18 11:46 AM)
Tried out the Mason Dixie pop-up this morning. I was dismayed to learn that they'd raised prices from their store on Bladensburg by about 25%, but at least it was delicious. At $10 for a fried chicken biscuit, though, I don't think I'll be going by very regularly.

JES says: (3/13/18 5:03 PM)
Anyone heard anything about Dacha? Doesn't seem like they've even started any kind of buildout work yet, and if anyone would want to be open during baseball season, you'd think it'd be a beer garden...

JNB says: (3/13/18 7:46 PM)
Those prices seem insane to me. Is that where the world is at in DC for a bacon, egg and cheese?

monkeyrotica says: (3/14/18 9:00 AM)
Well, you do have cheaper options if you don't mind your breakfast sandwich NOT being curated by artisans. link

JD says: (3/14/18 9:55 AM)
The loss of the I Street McDonald's meant the loss of easy access not only to my treasured McD's fountain Diet Coke, but to the sausage/egg/cheese biscuit, which is one of life's delights.

Ampersand says: (3/14/18 11:22 AM)
McDonald's breakfast biscuits are serious business. Relatedly, I was so annoyed when they rolled out all-day breakfast and yet somehow decided that DC was in the foul McMuffin region and not the rightful biscuit region.

202_cyclist says: (3/14/18 12:32 PM)
It is SWTLQTC territory but we have a friend who swears by the breaksfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos at Safeway.

@monkeyrotica-- good to see you back here commenting. Welcome back.

202_cyclist says: (3/14/18 12:32 PM)
*breakfast (spelling is a little difficult today)

CJBabyDaddy says: (3/14/18 2:09 PM)
@202: Tell your friend that on behalf of the people of my hometown (San Antonio), I issue this warning to both of you to NEVER use the following terms in the same sentence again:
— breakfast burrito
— Safeway
— good.

The following combination is acceptable:
— breakfast burrito
— Safeway
— bad.

dude says: (3/15/18 8:06 AM)
Now I want a breakfast burrito from Anita's.

Also, just a confirmation that both 4th and 5/6th were closed last night when I was getting home.

conngs0 says: (3/15/18 11:47 AM)
Thanks, dude. That explains why there was so much traffic on 3rd Street this morning! Just FYI, there is a very rudimentary ramp that partially blocks the far right of the northbound lane. This just means that cars proceeding north can't really pass those waiting to make a left onto the freeway.

CMG says: (3/15/18 4:41 PM)
Does anyone have an update on the Whole Foods?

I don't think this has been posted but I saw that Unity Health Clinic is opening in the building behind the pool, next to Van Ness elementary school.

Folks— come out on April 14 and help clean up the Anacostia. We’ve done this in previous years and it is an excellent opportunity to help improve the quality of the mighty Anacostia.

Also, looks like a(nother?) tower crane is coming soon, to Yards Parcel L. Or maybe it did this weekend.

malatesta says: (3/18/18 2:20 PM)
Yea, it looks like the parcel L crane is up. However, one of the two cranes at parcel O has been taken down, so the neighborhood crane count remains at 12.

In re the store that shall not be named, I peeked through the windows earlier today and there hasn't been any build out work done, although maybe the permit is a sign that that's about to change.

RMP says: (3/20/18 9:29 AM)
Apparently there's a new street parking plan in the works for the Yards, with metered parking coming to 3rd and 4th between Tingey and Water and short term / Uber waiting area on Water. Not sure who is supposed to be in charge of enforcement since it seems like no one is enforcing any of the no parking rules on those streets right now. There's also supposedly a Car2Go "micro" lot (whatever that is) next to the Winery and Maven cars in the Arris garage (their website only shows cars in the 300 M St garage).

CJBabyDaddy says: (3/20/18 10:13 AM)
@RMP: Agreed on the lack of parking enforcement on 4th, south of Tingey. I say just meter the hell out of the block to put an end to the brazen abuse of the free 15-minute parking/waiting spots.

JD says: (3/20/18 10:18 AM)
The on-street parking is mentioned in the new Yards zoning filing to extend the surface lot orders for another five years. That filing also says that there will be 80-90 public spaces in the Parcel L garage. (It didn't mention any at Parcel O, but that might just be because there wasn't a lot on Parcel O, and there was on L.)

JD says: (3/20/18 10:20 AM)
(And, just to anticipate the likely question--they are not expecting the F/H/I parcel lots at 1st and N to actually remain for the full five years, but they want the flexibility.)

RMP says: (3/20/18 10:58 AM)
Wasn't the original plan to have public parking in the Arris garage? Aside from a few ballgames and Friday night concerts I've never seen it open for public parking. I never understood why the streets around Yards Park weren't metered before now, honestly.

202_cyclist says: (3/20/18 11:58 AM)
Speaking of mobility, has anyone tried out the Lime Bike scooters? We're thinking of having a scooter race, with the winner getting a happy hour tab paid.

Ampersand says: (3/20/18 1:15 PM)
A friend supposedly heard from a friend that All-Purpose is aiming to soft open around March 30th, but I couldn't verify anything. Fingers crossed!

CJBabyDaddy says: (3/20/18 1:16 PM)
@RMP Arris had public parking for at least a year, maybe while occupancy was low and ramping up. But clearly those days appear gone.

@202: I‘m sadly waiting for the first WaPo “Tourist On Rented Scooter Kills 80-Year-Old Pedestrian” headline.

caphillguy says: (3/20/18 4:54 PM)
Anyone know what's going on inside Building 202? I saw construction workers inside this morning along with steel stud framing just inside the entrance on Tingey.

Either an owner or construction at oauth pizza said they would be open in 2 weeks in time for opening day.

JD says: (3/21/18 9:51 AM)
Re: 202, they are probably just trying to keep it from falling down, or the Parcel O construction is using it for staging.

JD says: (3/21/18 7:22 PM)
I went a little less kindergarten this time, but here is my rendering of the Paradigm project at 1000 1st St. SE.

JD says: (3/21/18 10:22 PM)
Also, you may notice that the Projects map at the upper right of all pages now is updated with the latest projects underway or about to be.

(I am trying to catch up on a lot of stuff. I've been a little preoccupied since, oh, 2016.)

1000 I St looks good. It appears to have windows and doors and the multi-color exterior looks nice.

It does look like it is hovering above the ground, however.

JD— how will this impact the opening date for the NJ Ave Whole Foods?

202_cyclist says: (3/24/18 5:54 PM)
It looks like there there was considerable construction work done at All Purpose Pizza. Also, if you haven’t already, wander over to Buzzard Point and check out the progress on the DC United stadium. Whoa!

malatesta says: (3/24/18 7:05 PM)
Wandered down to the riverfront, and had a beer at Morini Piccolo, to which was doing a preview weekend type deal. It was pretty great!

202_cyclist says: (3/25/18 12:39 PM)
Folks— excellent news! The dentist that was located in South Capitol Street, near the 7-11 closed, so there is no net increase in dentists in the greater JD Land metropolitan area.

jdc says: (3/26/18 3:37 PM)
per JD Land's retweeting, All Purpose opens April 3.
