Sliding from Before to After
With my trip to the disabled list delayed thanks to a very-last-minute insurance snafu, I decided on Sunday to finally limp over to 8th Street for the first time in forever to see what has sprouted. * EMBLEM: There's one obvious new sprout on lower 8th, and that is the nearly-topped-out construction of a new condo building on the southeast corner of 8th and Virginia. It's officially known as the Emblem at Barracks Row, a 20-unit building being built and run by Bozzuto. Every unit has a unique layout, according to the web site, and there will be six penthouse units, most with outdoor terraces. (And since it's only four stories tall, it's a sticks-and-bricks building, which we don't see many of in these parts.) There will also be 3,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Sales on the units should begin this year. (I do not know the price ranges.) A rendering of the finished product can be peeked at here. * LA MEDITERRA: A new restaurant has opened south of L, next door to Las Placitas in the space once occupied by Ziaffat. It's La Mediterra Fusion Grill, serving kabobs, shwarma, and other Mediterranean offerings (and wings!), and it is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Here's a peek at the menu, if you have your x-ray specs handy. * NAILS!: I think it's been there a few months, but Navy Nails and Spa is now in the ground floor of the gray building on the northeast corner of 8th and M. * POTOMAC AVENUE DOINGS: Meanwhile, around the corner on Potomac Avenue between 8th and 9th, the long-vacant apartment building at 816 Potomac is now undergoing renovations to be a rental building with what now is targeted to be 19 units, if designs are approved. As for the empty lot next to that building at the corner of 9th and Potomac, the Board of Zoning Adjustment voted in December to approve plans for a four-story, 49-unit building at 818 Potomac, which would also be notable for plans to have a "parking elevator" garage that would allow 43 cars to be parked/stacked on one level. Both projects are being developed by the Murillo Malnati Group.

Regular elevators break quite enough, but at least you can just take the stairs. I can't imagine the headaches involved in a car elevator.

Stopped by La Mediterra for lunch yesterday. Ordered the beef shawarma on lavash bread and a side of falafel with tahini. The beef was tasty and filling and the check was $10 and change, which is about what you'd pay for the same from a food truck.
mensan98th says: (1/9/18 10:20 AM)
I hope La Mediterra hangs around. It'd be nice to have it in the neighborhood and on the (for now) easier-to-access end of 8th Street SE.

Thank you for the updates. I noticed there is now a dumpster, a small tractor, and a port-a-potty on the vacant lot immediately north of Eagle Academy on K and NJ Ave, SE.
Ampersand says: (1/9/18 5:14 PM)
Presumably anyone affected would have noticed by now, but apparently there's a somewhat sizable power outage in the neighborhood that seems to have taken out the traffic light at New Jersey and M. Based on a couple minutes worth of observation, the general driver consensus seems to be that Traffic Light Out = Full-Speed Green For Everyone. Safe passage, everyone...
EPM says: (1/9/18 6:13 PM)
This may be old news as I’ve been out of commission awhile myself but since Whole Foods questions are never far between - there are what I believe are more/new signs in the windows with the WF logo and “coming soon.”
jdc says: (1/10/18 10:13 AM)
Not sure it's new, but I just noticed that the Homewood Suites on Half and M streets has a large, blue LED display running from just above the entrance to the top of the building. It sort of mimics a wave, flowing up and down, down and up.
202_cyclist says: (1/10/18 11:47 AM)
Folks, I have some unfortunate news to report. As per the ANC 6D agenda for this past Monday's meeting, there was a request for a five year extension for the Yards parking lot, so I take this as a sign we're probably not going to the get Amazon II HQ in JD Land. linkOn the other hand, hyperloop and a drone-port still remain possibilities for the neighborhood.
Alex B. says: (1/10/18 12:52 PM)
"so I take this as a sign we're probably not going to the get Amazon II HQ in JD Land." There are lots of signs to look at for why Amazon won't be coming to DC, but this is not one of them.
JES says: (1/10/18 2:23 PM)
5 year extension also doesn't mean that the lot will remain a lot for the entire 5 years. If their permit was up and they needed to reapply, they probably don't want to have to do so on an annual basis, so why not ask for longer?
Ampersand says: (1/10/18 2:42 PM)
From Tom Sietsema's chat today: "All-Purpose is gearing to open by mid-February," creator Michael Friedman texted [Tom] earlier today. "We had some major setbacks with our build-out, but can't wait to serve the community some old-school deck-oven pizza and delicious antipasti!"
jdc says: (1/10/18 2:45 PM)
I was wondering what was going on with All-Purpose. This has been a very slow build out.
RMP says: (1/10/18 3:15 PM)
Does anyone in the biz know why restaurant build-outs always seem to take so long? Is it the permitting? Installing the cooking equipment? Something else?
202_cyclist says: (1/10/18 3:19 PM)
@RMP-- I think dealing with DCRA and the other DC regulatory agencies takes an exceedingly long time.
JNB says: (1/10/18 8:16 PM)
Was at Wise Guys picking up pizza for dinner and they confirmed they are opening in the hood. Said it would be a couple of months or so.
RMP says: (1/11/18 7:49 AM)
Speaking of slow build-outs, did 18-8 just give up? It seems like they've been stuck at 90% of the way there for months.
