I'm usually not really one for Black Friday deals or chain restaurants, but the "year of growler fills" deal they had at Gordon Biersch today was solid.
202_cyclist says:
(11/24/17 3:56 PM)
@RMP— what was that deal? Apparently, Harry’s Reserve also has a Black Friday sale with people outside waiting for the store to open.
RMP says:
(11/24/17 4:05 PM)
@202_cyclist for 50 bucks you got a growler and 52 coupons for growler fills during 2018. IIRC Harry's does the Bourbon County release on Black Friday. I'm not sure if it's really a deal so much as access to a limited item.

Forget Whole Foods, we need an Eataly market for the neighborhood.

How much will rental rates and house values go up the day it opens? That's what we really want to know, right?
RMP says:

I don't know what the red stickers on the floor plans on the wall of the Bower sales office mean exactly; but if it means those units are off the market, then it seems sales are moving swiftly, including the biggest penthouse unit.
202_cyclist says:
(11/28/17 2:04 PM)
It might not be Eataly or Whole Foods but Arby's is purchasing Buffalo Wild Wings. I don't know if this will affect the BWW in our neighborhood.
jdc says:
(11/28/17 2:23 PM)
To be clear, the private equity group that owns Arby's is buying BWW. I don't see any change per se, absent that group trying to increase profits to justify the purchase.

RMP: One red dot is mine! I think it might be a little misleading, as floors 4-10 are the same, and I think they only have one board representing them all. How many look like they are sold?
RMP says:
(11/29/17 9:13 AM)
I think there are 5 floorplans hanging on the wall? I didn't count and it's kind of hard to see while walking past from the outside, but there are a lot of red stickers.
Morini Mondays is back but it's up to $12 this year. I had a not-so-great experience last year when it felt like the plates were mass produced and way below normal quality. Either it was an off-night or you get what you pay for.
nsfw says:
(11/29/17 10:57 AM)
RMP: I think there are a lot more than 5 floorplans (condo layouts), but 5 floor types (floor layouts). Floors 5-10 are the same (4 is similar), with 2, 3, and penthouse floors being different.

Four guys at the corner of New Jersey and k and isaw the building mock up for that spot. 6 separate brick combination sounds they were looking at. Looks Like the building will only take half the block.

Good news on the bridge, JD! Thanks for passing it along. The sooner it's completed, the better, so I'm glad the additional quibbling over the design didn't result in a delay.

Is this the last approval before beginning construction? I somehow feel naive even asking that given how complex and how many agencies sign off on construction in DC.

Well - while not Eataly, and not technically our hood, there is the Italian market and trattoria coming to the Wharf by the guy behind Masseria. So there’s that.

Has anyone noticed the odor that seems to be lingering around Navy Yard lately? Particularly on New Jersey avenue near Slipstream. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this smell? Any time we have our windows open it seems to seep into our apartment.
GoNavy says:
(11/30/17 11:01 AM)
@ColoradoCane Yes! It has been there for the last two months at least. Smell it every morning heading to Orange Theory. It seems to be coming from the sewer right in front of Slipstream. Maybe 311 call?
202_cyclist says:

@ColoradoCane:
It has smelled like poop at the intersection of I St and NJ Ave for a long time. I blame the proximity to the Capitol right down the street.

Apologies for my fuzzy memory, but I believe either JD reported on this or I saw something put out by Meredith Fascett that the issue had been raised to DC water. I also seem to recall the unsatisfying response that there was nothing that they could do. More generally, I have also notice the stank of the neighborhood, usually when I open the front door in the morning. Hopefully it's just the time of year?
JD says:
(11/30/17 11:31 AM)
There's a certain aroma that parts of the city get whenever it hasn't rained much, and I think that is some of what you are getting in the neighborhood right now.
As for that corner, yeah, that's been a perpetual problem. Might have to wait until the trash transfer block gets developed before someone digs up New Jersey to get at the pipes.
Shogungts says:
(11/30/17 11:36 AM)
I have noticed the smell at NJ and it is the same smell that I would often smell at Washington and C St St when walking near there. Congress jokes aside - I wonder if it has something to do with the sewer system in the area in general.
202_cyclist says:
(11/30/17 1:19 PM)
Also, it seems that every year once the temperature drops below about 40 degrees, several people don't clean up after their dogs until the spring. Perhaps this is contributing to the aroma that you've been smelling.
goldfish says:

"There's a certain aroma that parts of the city get whenever it hasn't rained much..."
The lack of rain tells me that a trap, or traps, have dried out. When that happens, you smell the sewer gas. If it goes away when it rains, or when water is dumped down the drain, that confirms it.
202_cyclist says:
(11/30/17 3:25 PM)
@goldfish-- so does the sewage run into the Anacostia then after it rains? If so, well, I'm glad I'm not a goldfish.
ColoradoCane says:
(11/30/17 5:28 PM)
Glad to see I am not the only one. Interesting thoughts on why this issue may be occuring. Hopefully it will get resolved at some point in the future, otherwise maybe it will keep everyone away from the Whole Foods and we can have it all to ourselves.
malatesta says:
(11/30/17 5:40 PM)
Park Chelsea/Agora was, I think, built on a vault sewer (for stormwater retention). There's a sewage line that goes straight along NJ down to the pumping station.
Let's just say that hydrogen sulfide gas has a way of getting out, even if they say it's all sealed up. Its usually worse on the other side of the street on the corner by Slipstream, but pretty much any of the manholes along NJ smell like, well, sewage on any given day. Its worse when temperatures drop.
