 Sliding from Before to After

Sunday morning brought a confluence of a clear calendar, clear skies, and a sort-of-unexpected desire to "get back to work," such as it is, so I took a long walk to get the JDLand camera caught up with the goings-on in the neighborhood. Here's the rundown:
* UPWARD: The biggest news (for me, anyway) is that at last the 99 M office building project has peeked up above ground-level. Also worth getting excited about is seeing the structural steel going up for the new DC Water headquarters along the banks of the Anacostia.
* DOWNWARD: There's digging underway (or about to be) in multiple locations, and the camera peeked past the fences to check out the holes. In order, may I present the current state of: the former McDonald's site at 2 I Street (where a 380-unit apartment building will rise), the Yards Parcel O site at 4th and Tingey (where a joint condo/apartment project has been slooowly underway thanks to the need to dig very carefully when it's an old munitions site), the mixed-income Capper apartment building at 3rd and L, and the JBG West Half residential project directly north of Nats Park.
(I missed the hole at South Capitol and M where the new NAB headquarters and the 10 Van residential building will rise, but it probably doesn't look all that much different from this.)
Then there's the Half Street Hole, where work does appear to be underway, but since excavation was done in 2007, it's kind of hard to tell what's new (I should have gone up to the Hampton Inn roof). Finally, there's the lot at Half and L where fences recently went up around the site that will be Phase II of the Parc Riverside apartment building, but while some dirt has been turned, heavy equipment isn't quite yet on site.
So, if you are counting, that is eight additional projects that will rise out of the ground in the coming year or so, along with the four others that are already above ground but not done.
* OUTWARD: Vertical construction has been finished for a while at the residential building 1221 Van just north of the ballpark, but exterior work has progressed since I last wandered by. And ditto for the District Winery building at 4th and Water.
* ONWARD: Some additional catching up.
And there are going to be lots of other "for the historical record" photos that have been needed to be taken for some months added to various project pages in coming days. Just click around from the main map--you'll never know what you might find.

Thanks for the update! Here's a not great photo of the Half Street Hole from the F1rst roof on Saturday. Was this the project that might maybe still have some condos? Or am I thinking of something else?

I don't know why exactly, but 99 M street (in my mind) will really serve as a big change to the visual landscape. Sort of like Insignia was/is.

I am updating the Sliders this morning, and the 1st and M/99 M one is one of my absolute favorites. As is scrolling through the progression of shots on that corner.

JD-- thank you for the updates and the photos.

Following up on the Rooftop Hop this Saturday, all of the rooftops were great and I want to thank all of the local restaurants that participated. I'm looking forward to Rasa opening. The dish they were serving was absolutely delicious.

Thanks for the updates JD! One tidbit: Soul Cycle will be going into one of the retail spaces in One Hill South, believe it will be the North side of the building. So there's that.

Also, tried the Salt Line last night. They did a good job with design, despite my earlier fears (though I still think a more Southern-style rustic space with roll-up doors is desperately needed in the 'hood.) They are still working out the kinks (there were quite a few), but the burger was delicious on the second try, as was the lobster roll on the first, and you can't beat sitting next to the river and enjoying the breeze, watching a game outside, etc. Great addition to the neighborhood.

+1 to the neighborhood needing a place with roll-up doors. I cannot imagine what BlueJacket was thinking in only getting a track for their garage door that only rolls up 2 feet. And they never even open that. Let the outdoors IN, my friends!

Roti (next to Chop't) is progressing with their build-out and it sure looks like there's a giant roll-up door taking up much of the facade. Time will tell how it's utilized, though I don't think Roti serves alcohol, so it probably won't be a good place to post up with a beer.

Anyone know what "neighborhood day" at the Nationals game on July 6 is all about? If it's just a discount code for tickets then that's not very interesting, but if there's more I'd love to know.

The fireworks were part of a travel association trade show at Nationals Park. I don't understand why these things aren't better communicated so the neighbors know what's going on. This happened last year too when Arris had "surprise" fireworks as part of their grand opening party.

Hey, Go Navy, quit interrupting our Tower Crane breaking news/ fireworks commentary thread.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!! Tower crane is being installed as I type this at the Parcel O Bower/Guild site.

Though I did not jump out of my chair, I did get up during a timeout in the Dubs/Cavs game to look out the window from Alexanndria to see if I could determine the site of the fireworks.

Good review of Salt Line. This was the one restaurant I was not excited about - still haven't been to Whaley's - but I am not very keen on trying this place. link

Thanks for sharing, jdc! Curious about why you aren't interested in Salt Line or Whaley's. Do you just not like seafood?

I'm looking forward to trying out Salt Line after it's had a few more weeks to settle into a routine, but I've been to Whaley's a few times and have been pretty impressed. My favorite time to go there is between meals on a weekend when I'm looking for a snack and a drink (or two). I've found the bartenders to be pretty competent with respect to mixing drinks (I like how they put their own spin on things without getting too outside the box) and always enjoyable to chat with. Still haven't tried the "rose garden" but it looks like they've done a good job setting it up.

We went to the Salt Line on Sunday to sit on the patio and it was a great time. Wonderful ambiance, the food was real good (especially considering they had been open for 4 days). The service was spotty, but they made up for it by comping a couple of drinks, which they did not have to do. It's going to take a lot of willpower for me to not swing by that bar every time I'm out walking the dog...
