Sliding from Before to After
The JDLand camera shook off the cobwebs on Thursday and took a tour of Insignia on M, the new 324-unit apartment building at the corner of New Jersey and M, SE. The full gallery is here, and it was good timing that the visit came on the first non-gloomy day in what felt like weeks, since the bright sunlight (remember that?) gives many of the photos, especially from the roof, some added pop. The final stop on the tour was at the building's first retail tenant, where the official word came that Bethesda Bagels will open for business at 6:30 am tomorrow, Saturday, June 3. Here's a sampling of shots, but there's plenty more in the full gallery:

JD-- thank you for the updates. This morning, I saw someone painting the exterior of Anne's wigs. The store appeared to be closed-- I have no idea what the status of this store is. This building would be a great opportunity to add 2-3 units of housing, especially if a pop-up was added.
JD says: (6/2/17 10:31 AM)
I'm sure Donohoe is tha-rilled that Ann's didn't sell out to them three years ago. But I also don't know what the real story at Ann's now.
RMP says: (6/2/17 10:37 AM)
Great pictures, JD! I get that it's a big selling point for a building to have a rooftop pool, but wow that looks like a small pool to share among 324 units. I am really looking forward to getting my bagels tomorrow.
JD says: (6/2/17 10:38 AM)
The dimensions of the lot that they built on, and the need for a courtyard space within it, did not give them a lot of options.
202_cyclist says: (6/2/17 12:04 PM)
Speaking of rooftop pools--- a free JD Land shirt for any of the people here who do a cannonball into the pool during the rooftop hop tomorrow?
walt says: (6/2/17 1:24 PM)
I like that they put the common elements of game room and social area couches in the lobby. My older condo has a separate game room, sitting room, relaxation room and very few people use them. And if someone does enter the room, no one else will because we feel we're invading their privacy. So keeping that space open and having people walk through it seems as if it would encourage more friendly conversations and mixing.
NJAve says: (6/2/17 2:04 PM)
Any update on what's going into suite 130 (between Bethesda Bagels and the lobby)-on the NJ Ave side of the building? I've seen them doing work there.
JD says: (6/2/17 2:05 PM)
There does not appear to be any hint of any other signed leases, so I don't know what that is for.
JD says: (6/2/17 2:20 PM)
A reader sent me a photo from the kiosk at the Yards Parking Lot on 3rd St. saying that it was to be closing June 1. Has anyone seen whether parking has stopped? This is Parcel L, so I am wondering if they are getting close to starting the apartment building there.
(It must be the sun finally being out--I have found some energy for JDLand in the past day or so, and am trying to catch up a bit.)
BLT says: (6/2/17 11:44 PM)
Salt Line is fantastic! The design/decor, service and food are all wonderful. The lobster rolls are huge and really tasty. What a great addition to the neighborhood.
RMP says: (6/3/17 10:52 AM)
It's a beautiful day for a rooftop open house! Bethesda bagels was packed at 10:30 this morning. I'm pretty sure I was the only person in there other than the staff not wearing gym clothes. Lot L is officially closed and all vehicles have been removed. They're re-directing everyone to Lot Q. Though I'm not sure what happens to the monthly parkers there? Perhaps they've been moved into the Arris garage? Last I heard the Arris garage was not going to be used for public parking any more due to "higher than expected demand from residents". But this seems more likely to me. The Juice Laundry contractors have metal studs up, but no walls yet. It's only a matter of time now though.
202_cyclist says: (6/3/17 1:37 PM)
Minor update-- the Indian fast food restaurant on lower 8th Street is once again a Peruvian chicken restaurant.
JD says: (6/3/17 4:37 PM)
Actually, the Indian place used to be Levi's Port Cafe. The pollo place was next door, where Las Placitas now is.
202_cyclist says: (6/3/17 8:05 PM)
Great job to the Capitol Riverfront BID, the 90s cover band, As If, and everyone else who made the Rooftop Hop a success. What a great day touring some fantastic properties.
RMP says: (6/3/17 8:35 PM)
Which roofs did people like the best? I was pretty surprised with how nice all of them were. I thought One Hill South is the clear winner, though I don't think I'd ever want to live there.
malatesta says: (6/3/17 9:11 PM)
I didn't go to the rooftop hop, but I did get a bagel (whole wheat everything, with sundries tomato shmear) at Bethesda bagels. Best bagel I've had since I moved to DC. A clear win for the neighborhood. Also, I'm sure people have noticed the two big cranes and work being done at the DC water HQ site. I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on though. There's new steel beams being put up, but the old brick building is only partially demolished. Anyway, progress, which is good: that's still kind of an eyesore along the river walk.
jdc says: (6/5/17 8:18 AM)
I'll be at Bethesda Bagel tomorrow, and I am very excited to see how the hype lives up.
NJAve says: (6/5/17 1:42 PM)
My favorite 2 rooftops were Dock 79 and One Hill South, but the view from Dock 79 was WAY better. Who will be $6k/month to look at the highway and S Capitol St?
JES says: (6/6/17 1:36 PM)
@NJAve, they don't price differentiate between river views and city views? That's bizarre.
dude says: (6/7/17 7:44 AM)
There's probably a dozen reasons for why they make the pools only 3ft deep. Still I think it's dumb. I can almost get 3ft of water in my bathtub. Thanks for the pics!
Brett M says: (6/13/17 6:55 PM)
Wow that is one tiny pool. I don't see the point of having one if it's that small and shallow.
