 Sliding from Before to After

Cleaning out the hopper:
* FIVE GUYS: There's paper over the windows at the Five Guys on 2nd St., SE, but the official web site says (and a source has said the same) that this is a temporary closure, for some interior "refresh" work.
* ORANGETHEORY: The neighborhood's newest fitness offering will be opening in ORE 82 at New Jersey and I in March, but starting Tuesday, Jan. 3, pre-sales of "founding memberships" will begin.
* EAGLE ACADEMY: The charter school at 1017 New Jersey Avenue will be relocating after this school year ends to Naylor Road SE in Ward 8, "after recently learning that its leased facility in Ward 6 will be sold by the building's owner in August 2017." I imagine questioning eyes will now turn to the garage next door at New Jersey and L, wondering if its days are numbered as well, and if a developer is assembling the New Jersey-facing parcels on Square 740 for some future project.
* OH SAY, CAN YOU HEAR: If within the past month or so you've suddenly started hearing the National Anthem in the air at 8 am, you're not alone. (The Hill is Home)
There's probably more, but I've been awake for a good 90 minutes since my late-morning/early-afternoon nap and still need to get in my mid-afternoon nap before the game with the Washington Football Team gets underway.
But I'll add this, showing the view from the freeway 12 years ago today (Jan. 1, 2005) and a wider shot of the same general view back in August.
UPDATE, JAN. 2: Have you seen this cute little Chihuahua that went missing in the neighborhood?

Redskins... being a Washington sports fan is such a privilege.

Thanks for the further info about the national anthem here and in the other post's comments section.

Sad to see the school go. I would have liked it to be kept in the area as part of some development.

Ampersand says: (1/4/17 11:16 AM)
I would love to see the garage disappear, if for no other reason than to see the sidewalk redone in front of it. That sidewalk is a horrorshow (where it hasn't dissolved into pitted gravel and dirt). I also not-so-fondly remember the four or five times I've needed to dodge a cab pulling into the garage to avoid being hit (I walk this path on my daily commute).

At least the sidewalk north of Insignia should open back up soon so I won't have to deal with walking in front of the garage ever again.

jdc says: (1/4/17 1:46 PM)
I concur on the dismal state of that sidewalk, and how wonderful the sidewalk surrounding Insignia looks.

Related, who is in charge of the dismal asphalt sidewalk by the Half St. metro entrance? I can understand using asphalt temporarily during construction, or a period where multiple buildings are going up and the sidewalk might constantly be dug up....but nothing is going on there now, or in near future. And that side of the street is finished, up to monument valley. I'd assume the owner of the building? the city? Metro?

dbt says: (1/4/17 5:58 PM)
Agree with jdc. The asphalt sidewalks at the long-complete 55 M seem especially odd in contrast with the pavers and other finishing work that went into the temporary sidewalks at Spooky Park.

JES says: (1/5/17 12:34 PM)
Is it possible that they'll still have to tear that stretch of sidewalk up to run utilities for the coming monument valley buildings? That could be why it's still in crappy shape. That, or they might want the whole stretch of sidewalk to look uniform and as nice as possible, so they're waiting to do the whole block at once?

I haven't heard the anthem in the last two days. Have I just missed it or is it over?

JD says: (1/6/17 10:14 AM)
I think they tweaked the loudspeakers.

202_cyclist says: (1/6/17 1:06 PM)
Yesterday I noticed that someone was doing soil testing or boring at the McDonalds.

Also, it looks like there is some preliminary construction activity at the vacant lot across the street from Park Chelsea. Similarly, the sidewalk next to that lot on NJ Ave, between K and I St, is being replaced.

JD says: (1/6/17 1:11 PM)
Stop trying to make the lot across from the Park Chelsea happen. :)

MalS says: (1/6/17 3:14 PM)
Dear JD and Mr. JDLand,
I am very sorry for your troubles and hope you get some better news soon. Thank you for keeping us in touch in so many ways.

jdc says: (1/6/17 3:41 PM)
My heart is heavy for Mr. JDland and I wish him all the best.

Also, I wanted to note that it seems like sidewalk repair/replacement is beginning around 909 Half St (whatever it's new name is...One Tree Hill?)
