Page Through from Before to After
As first reported by commenter NJAve late yesterday, and then confirmed on Twitter (with photographic evidence) by another reader, the McDonald's at South Capitol and I Streets, SE, is closing today, Tuesday, Dec. 13. It was about 14 months ago that word first started filtering out about plans to redevelop the site, and in early 2016 the designs were unveiled for a two-phase project starting with a 380-unit apartment building at the corner of South Capitol and I. A raze permit has been filed for, and excavation and foundation permits are currently in process. Until such time as McDonald's decides to deign the neighborhood south of the freeway with its presence again, the closest outlet for Big Macs, Egg McMuffins, and the best fountain Diet Coke on the planet is at 4th and C, SW (though 15th and Pennsylvania SE is the closest drive-through, and perhaps the one in Crystal City on Route 1 is the quickest-closest). See my 2 I project page for more renderings, and photos. And maybe I'll throw this one out, for one last time. ("One last time / Relax, sit and have a Diet Coke with me / One last tiiiimmmeee.....")

It is probably not something that is approved by the American Cancer Society, but this McDonald's has been so handy these past few months when Mr. JDLand has been jonesing for comfort food.

No tears shed here (that must be a common theme for my posts lol).
202_cyclist says: (12/13/16 10:41 AM)
You can also get McDonalds from the Air & Space Museum but the one in SW by the hotel, motel, Holiday Inn is still probably the closest. link
RMP says: (12/13/16 11:18 AM)
I wouldn't mind if McDonalds came back in the ground floor of one of the new buildings over there, but I'm guessing the drive through was the big draw? I always kind of disliked it for that, since people would so often carelessly pull in and out of the lot. That's the worst part of bike on that stretch of I.
202_cyclist says: (12/13/16 11:20 AM)
@RMP--- I agree exactly. Most of the drivers were pretty courteous turning in and out of the McDonalds but it did create a potential hazard for cyclists and pedestrians.
JD says: (12/13/16 11:28 AM)
The photo isn't mine, it's the one from the Twitter confirm-er last night.

I still mourn the loss of the South Capitol Taco Bell.
GoNavy says: (12/13/16 1:52 PM)
I really hope there is going to be something around navy yard for late night eats. I believe that if you're hungry past 11PM (Five Guys) you are out of luck at this point.
stacycloyd says: (12/13/16 4:11 PM)
I'm sad! Many times I was able to make the cheap seats at a Nats game even cheaper by convincing myself to skip a snack at the ballpark and get an ice cream cone for the walk home. And I'm totally with you on the glories of fountain diet coke. It's a totally different and far superior product to what is sold in bottles or cans.
JES says: (12/13/16 6:04 PM)
Sad that I can't get McDonald's at 3am anymore, but definitely thrilled that I won't get almost hit on my bike every single day when going past the place...
keith18 says: (12/13/16 6:52 PM)
I didn't go there often, but when you really want McDonald's it is nice to have one nearby. I suspect the one at Penn and 15th isn't long for this world either.
Blue says: (12/14/16 7:09 AM)
Sure, if you want a Disney version of the real thing, then go for the fountain soda. Diluted with ice, and filtered through a plastic straw. But Diet Coke in a can is unlike anything else. The feel of cool, silky aluminum as it brushes my lips, contrasted with the mildly acidic bubbling foam as it bypasses lips to directly hit the tongue and roof of mouth. It's an exciting jolt of energy, refreshing and stimulating multiple senses at once. I wonder about the people who worked there. I've seen the same smiling faces in that drive thru for a few years. I'm sure it can't be easy to find a team that is that consistent. If anyone starts a donation pool to help get the employees thru Xmas, I would donate. Especially to the lady at the window who always says "come back again". It's more of a sweet comman than a request, and it always makes me feel appreciated!
JD says: (12/14/16 12:29 PM)
A White Castle would certainly give Mr. JDLand even more reason to keep on fighting. But they haven't ventured anywhere close to DC yet.
There is a whoooole lot of retail space on the boards. I'd like to believe McDonald's isn't permanently gone from the Hood. After all, they have that one right in the Verizon Center.
Section314 says: (12/15/16 1:47 PM)
Mr. JDLand doesn't need a White Castle! Being married to you is reason enough to fight!
