 Sliding from Before to After

I mentioned a few days ago that a sale to an unnamed buyer was pending, but it can now be said officially that the group of empty lots along 1st Street SE between K and L has been bought by Paradigm, with plans to build a 275-unit apartment building. Construction could start about a year from now, but We Shall See.
There are actually 14 individual lots facing 1st, two of which Akridge owned back before 2001 and the rest of which the company bought piecemeal in 2006 and 2008. Word had gotten out earlier this year that Akridge had put them on the market.
Old-timers will remember this stretch of 1st as the home of the Market Deli and some small auto-repair shops, which where all demolished in 2011. Here's a stroll down 1st Street Memory Lane, back to 2004:
(I'll also note that the purchase was technically made by Who's on First Properties, LLC. [I DON'T KNOW!!! THIRD BASE!!!])

Not to get into a political debate on this fine blog but considering who might be the next ambassador to Japan ( link perhaps Jayson Werth will be our next ambassador to South Korea. I mean he's hit a lot of home runs over his career, he's been a fan favorite, and his playing days are winding down. He's totally qualified to be ambassador.

Went down the rabbit hole on the Market Deli and was impressed to learn that its historic designation was rejected. Since when does DC reject ANYTHING from a historic designation??? I mean sure, it was a nasty run-down shack, but still! That was quite a bullet dodged. Can you imagine how long the decaying structure would have stood there otherwise? After all, the infamous Capitol Hill Shotgun House prevented development for THIRTY-ONE YEARS.

202, I'd be thrilled if Jayson Werth were named as an ambassador to any country because, despite his intentionally gruff presentation, he actually seems to be a pretty thoughtful guy, as evidenced by his fantastic interviews - link However, I'm not sure that Korea is the right place. Perhaps one of the European countries with a more storied racing history would be better. Given Werth's penchant for driving Porsches, Germany seems like a better choice. link

In all seriousness, Bobby Valentine has at least lived in Japan for a period of time, speaks the language and knows (and respects!) the customs. So... given some of the other choices the President-Elect has made for many other appointments, I'm pretty sure he could do much worse. Plus, if things go bad in Japan and our Ambassador gets kicked out, it's good to have a master of disguise to sneak back in if necessary. link

Also, any idea when the Whole Foods will be opening?

The block south of the Park Chelsea is controlled by the city, and is to eventually be a 322ish-unit mixed-income apartment building that is part of the Capper/Carrollsburg Hope VI redevelopment.

I'd say, without the slightest bit of recent actual information, that the Whole Foods is probably a year from opening. And if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone who knows the actual number will be happy to tell me. :)

DCisforLovers - I can see the charter school staying, and I personally think it would be a good, diverse use of the area. However, I wonder if it could be worked into a development, where maybe it has a part of the first floor and a playground outside and then the rest of the building is apartments?
