 Sliding from Before to After

There apparently is a DC Housing Authority "construction progress" meeting tonight at the Community Center at 6 pm.
I don't have more specifics from that, and I won't be able to be there, alas, but I do know that they will be displaying the renderings showing (at last) the designs for the two new buildings planned for Square 767, the block bounded by 3rd, 2nd, I, and K, in advance of a planned zoning filing early next year.
Given that it's been almost precisely one year since the specifics for this project were last discussed at a public meeting, I would prefer to wait for the zoning filing to describe any plans beyond that there will be a condo building by Capitol Quarter developer EYA on the southern end of the block, and a smaller rental building that will be some mix of affordable units and public housing units on the north end.
The above rendering shows both buildings as seen from Canal Park, with the taller condo building at right along K Street and the shorter affordable building at left along I. The drawings below show the block as seen from 3rd and I, in both wide and close-up views, along with the current state of that stretch of 3rd.
If you have any feedback for the plans, head to the meeting tonight (sorry for the late notice) or contact the Housing Authority, or just sound off in the comments.
And perhaps the meeting will also give details on the timeline for the new mixed-income rental building on Square 769, which is supposed to get underway Any Minute Now. (I'd also wager that the meeting might mention all the spiffy new sidewalks and streetlights around the DCHA lots along 3rd and also at 2nd and K.)
UPDATE: I tossed together an official project page for Square 767, now that there are purty drawings to look at.

Off topic a bit, but the big tree at New Jersey and I has been cut down. The corner looks way different now. A pity, it was one of the few tall trees left in the neighborhood.

The construction is still four years away. Square 769 is set to start either next month or January.

Malatesta, it is sad that the tree was cut down but it was diseased and dying (it was barely putting out leaves) and only a matter of time before it came down on its own. You can even see the rotted out heartwood in the stump. So, sad, but necessary.

This is across the way in SW but the Wharf development will be getting water taxi service. Hopefully our neighborhood can get water taxi service to Old Town, National Harbor, and DCA beyond the novelty service we have to/from the Nats games.

Agreed. My impression from the Washington Business Journal article is that there will be daily water taxi service to/from Nationals Park in addition to the Warf. With the number of residents expected to move into the Navy Yard neighborhood in the next year or so, this makes a lot of sense.

On the 767/769N subject, I suppose the renderings look ok, but we'll just have to see how (whether) the condo buildings are integrated with the public housing units. I'm thrilled to see progress on adding the promised affordable housing units back to the old Capper footprint and proud to be in a neighborhood that continues to address the shortage of public housing. Nevertheless, I'm also cognizant of the fact that while other public housing projects throughout the city have served to drag down development, lower property values, raise crime rates, etc., the integrated nature of the Capitol Quarter neighborhood so far seems like it's on track to being a tremendous success and might serve as a model for the future. It'll be a real shame if the separate buildings for public and market-rate housing hinders that positive momentum. In short, although I was unfortunately not in town for the DCHA meeting this week, my only request of them is to please not screw this up!

Was one of the docks at Yards Park intended to be for a water taxi? That'd be a better year-round place for a daily boat to dock, at least until more gets built at Florida Rock and along 1st Street.

Would love affordable water taxi, but at $40 round-trip, it just isn't a serious mode of transportation yet.
I would love to hop on a water taxi and jump over to Old Town for lunch or down to National Harbor for a little shopping. I can't understand why the businesses and BIDs in these three locations (and Georgetown) aren't joining together and subsidizing the water taxis. Or at least validating purchases for discounted fares.

Is there a plan to try to leave the mature trees on 3rd standing as they develop those vacant parcels? They are still healthy, beautiful trees and add so much to the area in terms of habitat for the local birds and a little co2 conversion to help us breathe with all these massive buildings. There isn't enough green space for all the people who are coming, and their dogs.

Following up my previous entry, the events of the last few days have really caused me to worry about the execution behind lots 767, 769N, etc.

Primarily, the heartbreaking story of the sixteen year old girl shot at Potomac Gardens is beyond tragic on its own merits. link

But a distant second is the fact that no one familiar with that area was surprised to hear that story. No one should have to live in such an environment. Likewise, no community should have to absorb a consistent source of violent crime. There's no reason why everyone can't be served by a properly executed and administered integration of low income and market based housing, and I desperately hope DCHA and the rest of the city government is up to the challenge when it comes to these lots.
