Page Through from Before to After
It took a while for the weather and the calendar to successfully dovetail, but on Sunday the JDLand Camera finally got a look at the new plaza now nestled between Diamond Teague Park and Dock 79, as well as the extension of the Anacostia Riverwalk westward. (I missed out on the fountains, though.) Once The Salt Line and All-Purpose open in their spots next year, and baseball fans figure out that there's a spot to hang out on the stadium's southeastern side (with handy built-in tables to eat carryout pizza at), this may become a pretty activated location. Especially in comparison to what it looked like 11 years ago.

My wife and I walked over there on Sunday afternoon. The public spaces of this site are very nice. On the western side of this, towards the proposed Bardo site, there is quite a bit of space. It would be nice if the Capitol Riverfront BID sponsored some kind of activity or seasonal events there, like a Saturday farmer's market, etc... I can only imagine how nice this location will be once the outside dining opens.
202_cyclist says: (10/19/16 3:38 PM)
Those photos would have looked even better if the Nationals were still playing now...
RMP says: (10/19/16 3:39 PM)
Great pictures. I also checked this out last weekend. Nice space. Dock 79 seemed completely deserted at the time. We could see pretty clearly into a bunch of units facing the river and it didn't look like any of them were occupied. I guess it only started move-ins a couple months ago so maybe it's still pretty empty.
SWag says: (10/19/16 3:46 PM)
Happy to have the new addition, but that brown surface looks horrible...
JD says: (10/19/16 3:50 PM)
There will also be prime seating for watching the Douglass Bridge construction/demolition.
Chaifetz10 says: (10/19/16 3:54 PM)
@202: Dock79 is still building out the dog park and volley ball courts. Landscaping just went in yesterday and they're on track to have them completed in the next few weeks. Look for the construction fence to come down soon after. @RMP: Move ins are happening almost on a daily basis. It appears that most have been on the South half of the building as only see a few people on the North end of the court yard from our unit. Construction crews are still finishing the rooftop deck so it's still not open to residents... and I can see cleaning crews on some of the top floors getting units ready for move ins as well.

Those seats look like prime viewing for bands on a barge! We need a Barge Band ASAP!
CJBabyDaddy says: (10/19/16 10:16 PM)
If you know any barge bands auditioning to fill an inexperienced kazoo virtuoso vacancy, I can give you my agent's contact info to pass along.
dcgent says: (10/20/16 3:42 PM)
Had a long talk with a Bardo bartender last weekend. Those are its fermentation tanks farther down near the bridge. They're still quite confident of moving into that space by spring time--despite some roadblocks--and I guess they can brew beer there in any case? They say the developer doesn't want to do that third site until the old bridge is own/new is up, so they think they could have a cool beergarden site for 2-5 years. might add a pizza oven outside for slices, etc though the new pizza place is there. We'll see if they can pull it off.
JD says: (10/23/16 9:08 PM)
Nah, I was just filling in some holes this morning and testing my new camera some more.
But maybe some tidbits are in the offing.
E. Masquinongy says: (10/24/16 8:42 AM)
Regarding the Douglass Bridge demo, when will that start?
JD says: (10/24/16 9:04 AM)
They haven't even awarded the design/build contract yet for the Douglass Bridge. I can't imagine it's anything less than a year away.
NavyYahd says: (10/26/16 2:00 PM)
Does anyone know what the plan is with what appears to be landscaping in the lot across from Park Chelsea?
202_cyclist says: (10/27/16 12:09 PM)
Construction is definitely underway for the new DC Water and Sewer Authority headquarters. I saw that a barrier was installed around the perimeter of the construction and a construction crew was remove the current concrete and pavement at the site.
jdc says: (10/27/16 3:30 PM)
I've said it for other parts of the area, but turning the lower 1st St. corridor into something other than the dump it is will have a HUGE impact on JD Land.
JD says: (10/28/16 3:36 PM)
Did not really intend to go quiet this week, but gears are kind of shifting in Mr. JDLand's treatment, and so my focus is elsewhere right now as we try to get everything lined up. (He's still feeling pretty good, though.)

Of possible interest -- this was sent on the Capitol Hill listserve last week. I'll be attending this meeting. =================================================================== The DC Office of Planning (OP) is amending the District’s Comprehensive Plan, a 20-year framework that guides future growth and development in the city and shapes the places we live, work, shop, and play. OP launched the second amendment cycle to the Comprehensive Plan this year to ensure that the Plan remains responsive to the needs of the community. Your ideas are essential to a successful amendment process. Between October 19th and November 14th, OP is hosting a series of 7 community meetings. The meetings are organized geographically by Area Elements. Since the Comprehensive Plan is a 20-year plan, the Plan uses Area Elements instead of Wards since Ward boundaries can change every ten years. Please RSVP and check out the map to find a meeting closest to you. For more details about the Comprehensive Plan, Area Elements and the Amendment Process, please visit PlanDC.dc.gov and sign up for alerts. Please join us for a meeting in your area element which includes Capitol Hill/Lower Anacostia/Near Southwest: Date: Nov 3rd Location: Jefferson Academy Middle School Academy, 801 7th Street SW Nearest Metro: L’Enfant Plaza Time: 6:00-8:30pm (presentation starts at 6:30) Contact the DC Office of Planning at PlanDC@dc.gov or 202-442-7600 and follow us on Twitter at @OPinDC #PlanDC #DCCompPlan. Come learn about the amendment process, share your ideas and help shape the future of the District!

Walked over there last night for the first time since the new stuff was put in. Looks like a good hang out area before Nats games for people that are into that sort of thing. Did anyone else find Side Yards much more lame than in previous years?
