Page Through from Before to After

While no deal is as yet inked with an operator, the DC Housing Authority is operating a "Summer Club" at the new Capper Community Center through Aug. 19, with activities ranging from Zumba for kids to computer instruction, creative writing, field trips, and more.
There are also plans in the works to have after-school activities available while waiting for the operations bureaucracy to conclude, including basketball in the spiffy new gym. Keep an eye on the building's web site for additional details, or call 202-547-0581.
Although the building has been open for a number of weeks, the JDLand camera has only just now made a visit--and the resulting photo gallery is not only a trip through a rainbow of colors, but is also the swan song for JDLand Camera III, which is being retired after eight years of valiant service. (I had hoped it would be the debut of JDLand Camera IV, but the Postal Service was two hours too late.)
The full gallery is here. And here's a final before-and-after to wrap up my tracking of this project, from before the demolition of the old center's building in 2007 to the start of construction in spring 2014 to its completion:

Looks good but I would like to see a real rooftop vegetable garden there like there is at Nats Park instead of the little patches of grass.

JD Land photography class at the new community center?

JD says: (8/12/16 11:47 AM)
"Okay, class, let's begin. See that building? Point your camera at it and press the shutter. Class dismissed!"

Project Manager says: (8/12/16 4:29 PM)
I am so happy that you liked the colors and the layout of the center. The goal of this building is to attract neighborhood residents so that we can have greater levels of civic participation and to create links between neighbors that might not otherwise come about in the normal course of day-to-day interaction. Thanks for showing off this great building.

JD says: (8/12/16 4:39 PM)
Your comment makes me think that I need to take a moment to officially remember ANC commissioner Ron McBee, who was such a strong proponent of getting this community center up and running. He would have been very pleased to have seen that you guys got the job done.

So....is it ever going to open? Are they any closer to find an organization to run it? Kids around here could really benefit from it.

JD says: (8/12/16 10:51 PM)
As I said in the post, and as the link to the web site shows, they have been running a summer camp for neighborhood kids, and are planning some after-school activities (including basketball), even while the search for an operator continues....

Shogungts says: (8/12/16 10:54 PM)
JD - as a Gator, how could you like the the colors in the gym? As a Hurricane alumnus, I love them :)

JD says: (8/12/16 11:34 PM)
I did mention that if they come in one day and the green has suddenly become blue, that they shouldn't suspect me at all, no sir.

I'm more of a lurker here rather than a poster but that was LOL funny.

So is there some type of rooftop amenity?

202_cyclist says: (8/15/16 1:03 PM)
Off topic but does anyone know what the Nationals magic number is?

walt says: (8/15/16 4:38 PM)
So is there an actual name on this building? Sometimes it's called Capper and sometimes Capitol Quarter and sometimes just "Community Center".

I hope this doesn't sound "gentrist", but I really don't like anything associated with the name "Capper" or "Carrolsburg". Those names have a long dark history of violence associated with them and I'm not keen on having those names associated with anything in my neighborhood.

Shogungts says: (8/15/16 7:43 PM)
@202 - there are 46 games left and they have a 8.5 game lead on the Marlins, so I believe that makes the magic number 38.

Shogungts says: (8/15/16 7:47 PM)
Note: that did not take into account the Wildcard, but since there are teams ahead of the Marlins in the Wildcard standings, the Nationals' magic number to clinch the division is less than the magic number to guarantee at least a Wildcard spot.

CJBabyDaddy says: (8/15/16 8:09 PM)
Chill, Walt. All the states of the Confederacy have kept their names despite their dark history of bloodshed in defense of slavery and that which followed. The names Carrollsburg and Capper deserve an equal opportunity at rehabilitation.

JD says: (8/16/16 9:05 AM)
@202, if you go here and choose NL East, the number in the E# column is the magic number:

Nats are now at 37.

For the record on "Carrollsburg", the name goes back to before there was a DC. Daniel Carroll was a landowner in the area, founding "Carrollsburg" much like "Georgetown," and was a member of a prestigious family in the area (the same family for which "Carrollton" is named) He was one of the signers of the Constitution. Carrollsburg was located in what is now SE/SW DC, south of modern day M St. and straddling modern day South Capitol St. John Carroll sold (deeded?) much of the land to the new Federal government to create the Nation's capital city. It was essentially bounded by the creeks (what became canals) in the L'Enfant plan (link and is mentioned (briefly) in the Wikipedia page on DC Geography. The 1770 map is in the DC archives ( link An overlay compared to modern streets is here (link You can Google more about it to get more history, especially if you search for Daniel Carroll.

So while it might recently be associated with the problem housing previously in the SE quadrant, "Carrollsburg" is an important part of the DC historical fabric.

walt says: (8/16/16 4:07 PM)
Fair enough CJBD. I'll chill. :)
And thanks for the history lesson Southwest_EA. I think I read a part of that before but had forgotten it.

jdc says: (8/16/16 5:06 PM)
great history!

CJBabyDaddy says: (8/16/16 6:17 PM)
Southwest_EA -- spittin' the knowledge and raisin' everybody's I.Q. Go on wit' your bad self!

Southwest_EA says: (8/17/16 9:59 AM)
Full disclosure (and a minor correction) - I first learned of the history of "Carrollsburg" from a very knowledgeable DC cab driver, so the knowledge I drop is thanks in large part to that fine gentleman. Never would have known the history without him. Correction in my post: I accidentally typed "John Carroll" vice "Daniel Carroll" in reference to the land transfer.

jdc says: (8/17/16 2:56 PM)
A little birdie told me, though I have not seen it with my own eyes, that signage is going up for Parc Riverside Phase II is going up.

BLT says: (8/17/16 5:50 PM)
@jdc....yep it is up and plastered on all three sides of the fences surrounding the lot. They mean business.

JD says: (8/17/16 5:52 PM)
Image from MLM on Twitter. As I told him there, I might be inclined to take the Over on that 2018 date. This time they will have to dig the hole (unlike with Phase 1) and at the ANC meeting a few months back it seemed like they hadn't quite settled some differences of opinion with Velocity in terms of garage access. (though maybe those are now settled, but it did seem like it would then impact the timeline for finalized designs, building permit applications, etc.)

Ampersand says: (8/18/16 3:58 PM)
Completely unrelated to anything above: I walked by Chix today and they're making good progress inside. No idea what the timeline is but I'm optimistic that it should only be another month or two before they open and start to get a lot of my lunch dollars...
