Page Through from Before to After

As part of the continuing reconstruction of the Virginia Avenue Tunnel, the intersection of 5th Street at Virginia Avenue will be closed starting Aug. 1 for three to four weeks for the installation of a temporary bridge deck.
The 6th Street exit ramp from eastbound I-695 will still be open during this closure, and traffic coming off the ramp will still be able to turn left to head north on 6th or continue straight on the one lane of Virginia Avenue open between 5th and 7th.
However, if you are south of Virginia Avenue and want to go north of the freeway, you will need to use either 3rd, 7th, 8th, or 11th Streets, SE. (The 7th Street intersection is expected to reopen from its own multi-week closure on Friday, July 29.)
Local traffic will still be allowed for the block of 5th Street north of K, including traffic to the Capper Seniors building.
See CSX's informational slides on this closure for additional details, or marvel at the wonder that is my own informational map above.
UPDATE, AUG. 2: The closure is officially underway.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I know a lot of people think CSX is the devil, but, these closures don't seem to really have a huge impact on things. Maybe I'm driving at times where any impact is less obvious though.

I think this neighborhood is really well-situated with numerous access points to any roadways we need. I use this intersection almost daily, and I will simply take the 11th street entrance to 295 OR I will go over the Douglass Bridge instead. No big deal.

Wow! Forest City knows how to throw a good party,

In somewhat better news, I am going to dig up some very (VERY) old code I wrote years ago for a bulletin board offering and repurpose it here. It won't be pretty, and it won't be very technologically advanced, but it'll be a step up from just yakking in the comment threads.

JES says: (7/29/16 12:06 PM)
...but i LIKE yakking in the comment threads

That just means there's somewhere for everyone!

Okay, the earliest-of-early version of the JDLand Message Board is here:

All beta testers welcome. Be prepared for anything beyond the basics to not work. But I was in the groove to just get the rudimentary version up and running, so have at it.

(and the first thing I realize I need to add is emoji)

Awesome!

Note there is now a sneak peek on the main home page for message board posts.

By the way, with access to the in-process permit database restored, I can update a few things:

* Parcel O does have a shoring permit but nothing more. (It looks like there's one shoring permit for both buildings, one foundation permit in process for both, and then two separate building applications in process.)

* JBG filed its shoring permit for Half Street last week.

* Jair Lynch has shoring and foundation permits in process for Monument Valley.

* Still no approved shoring permit for the NAB HQ or the attached residential building. (Shoring and foundation permits in process for both.)

* Shoring permit in process for 2 I St. (McDonald's)

There's also an early "civil"/infrastructure (water/sewer lines, etc.) permit application now in the pipeline for the Garrett.

jdc says: (8/1/16 11:03 AM)
btw Google Maps has updated the DMV area, and parts of DC are now 3D (though nothing with a federal presence, or so I'm told). JD Land is looking mighty different than before.

jdc says: (8/1/16 11:07 AM)
Actually, it seems everything east of canal park is 3D, including USDOT HQ.

JES says: (8/1/16 1:06 PM)
Glad to see Jair Lynch and JBG finally getting their asses in gear...

walt says: (8/1/16 2:47 PM)
The 3d Google maps is cool, thanks for sharing. Trees look pretty freaky though.

I like that the 3D view of the Nats stadium was taking during the prep/clean up of the Winter Classic

The WBJ reports that WMATA is considering selling its downtown headquarters adjacent to the Verizon Center. This would be welcome news and could generate revenue for the agency for much-needed maintenance.

If WMATA sells its HQ and relocates, the Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard would be an obvious choice, given its proximity to both the US DOT and DDOT headquarters.

JD says: (8/1/16 3:20 PM)
Wonder if they can still reneg on their plan to sell the Chiller site to MRP Realty.

202_cyclist says: (8/1/16 3:32 PM)
@JD: Good idea, since WMATA already owns that property. I would have to think, as nice as our neighborhood is, commercial property here is less than it is adjacent to the Verizon Ctr.

jdc says: (8/1/16 6:40 PM)
re: reneging on the sale of the chiller site: Jackson Graham building is 300,000SF ( link They want new site to be approx. 10% less SF. (same pdf). MRP Realty, which proposed the largest SF usage of the chiller property ( link is only building 163,000. Assuming MRP Realty isn't leaving anything on the table, the chiller plant site is just too small for WMATA's needs. Also, per the earlier pdf, they are looking at New Carrollton or Anacostia.

@202_cyclist,
Re: If WMATA sells its HQ and relocates, the Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard would be an obvious choice, given its proximity to both the US DOT and DDOT headquarters.

Please no. this neighborhood doesn't have enough parking spots for all the WMATA employees!

202_cyclist says: (8/2/16 8:51 PM)
I don't want to upstage our erstwhile blogger but it appears there is equipment for soil testing on the vacant lot behind the charter school, next to the Circulator bus terminus.

JD says: (8/2/16 8:54 PM)
We talked about Akridge putting that site on the market, didn't we? I assume the soil boring is due diligence for a sale.

The permit for the boring is the top one on my permit list, right next to where I'm typing!

RMP says: (8/3/16 10:51 AM)
Is this Shake Shack announcement a surprise to everyone? Or was I just not paying attention? link

JD says: (8/3/16 10:53 AM)
That is indeed a surprise. Wow!

I shall post on it when I am back in position, later today.
