While it's not a replacement for the Display Ship Barry, and it will only be in residence for a couple of days, fans of seaworthy vessels may be interested to check out the 176-foot Training Ship Freedom Star, which will be docked at the Navy Yard and open for tours on Sunday and Monday, May 22 and May 23, as part of events surrounding National Maritime Day.
The Freedom Star served primarily as a solid rocket booster recovery ship during the Space Shuttle program before being transferred in 2012 to the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD), which now uses it as a training ship, operating out of Piney Point, Maryland.
The ship will be open on both May 22 and 23 from 9 am to 11:30 am and again from 12:30 to 4 pm, via the Riverwalk (not through the Navy Yard itself). Note that it is not handicap accessible, and that pets are not allowed. Also, children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, and sturdy shoes are recommended.
The ship is expected to arrive around 5 pm on Saturday, May 21, so if you are finishing up getting soaked at Tour de Fat around that time, keep your eyes on the Anacostia for the guest.

Is getting soaked at tour de fat a reference to people getting hammered or literally soaked by the rain?

JD says: (5/20/16 4:57 PM)
Yes.

Agreed @ 202_cyclist---and I guess the Brig isn't open yet :/

@NavyYardGuy:

In fairness to the Brig, despite consuming a couple of good beers at Tour de Fat, it was otherwise a terrible weekend for drinking beer outside.

Thanks for the link, 202. I agree with everything that's been said so far on this subject. I'm also happy to see (but not at all surprised) that Charles Allen is engaged on this topic and taking the correct stance.

I can't figure out how to put a picture in this comment, but I saw the Freedom Star arrive at 3:30 sharp Saturday afternoon. It doesn't have that blue stripe anymore, apparently.

The TdF was a pretty great party, by the way. I was impressed at the number of people who turned out despite the rain! There were also a lot of folks out on Friday night for the TdF pre-party slash first Friday Night Concert of the year. I'm curious to see what turnout looks like when New Belgium isn't there.

(I keep meaning to add the option to include one image with comments, but haven't gotten around to it. Right now I'm the only one with the privilege, but I'll try to get it written, so that we can all start speaking purely in gifs and memes!)
