Page Through from Before to After

This weekend has one major event to remind folks of, and that's Saturday's expected departure of the Display Ship Barry, already being partially dismantled in preparation for its final trip down the Anacostia River.
UPDATE: The departure time is now set for 7:15 am. If weather intervenes, they will reportedly try again on Sunday. (I'll update this post if newer information comes along.)
Bring your white handkerchiefs to wave as she passes!
Other items on the near-term agenda:
* GRAND SLAM FOR SAFETY: On Thursday, May 5 (today for most of you reading this), from noon to 1:30 pm at the Fairgrounds, it's expected that more than 800 construction workers from the various projects currently being built here in {insert neighborhood name here} will attend the "Grand Slam for Safety" as part of the construction world's Safety Week for 2016. After starting off with a "round of stretching exercises" used at the start of the workday to help avoid injuries, there will be speakers, safety fall restraint and rescue demonstrations, and awards. The event is sponsored by Skanska and a slew of names familiar to anyone who looks at the signage at neighborhood construction sites.
* WHITE FORD BRONCO: The Miller Lite Summer Concert Series, formerly at Nats Park, shifts one block north to the Fairgrounds this year, and launches on Friday, May 6, with "DC's favorite '90s cover band," White Ford Bronco. Cover charge is $10, doors open at 5 pm.
* CHIHUAHUAHUAHUAS: Across the way, the 5th Annual Running of the Chichuahuas, rained out last weekend, is now scheduled for Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 4 pm, at 600 Water St., SW.
* DERBY DAY: Also on May 7, from 3 to 7 pm, is the previously mentioned Due South Derby Day, for all your julep and southern cookin' needs.
* VINOFEST: Or, if you juleps aren't your speed, there's Vinofest DC on May 7 from 3 to 10 pm, in the parking lots at 1st and N SE. Tickets start at $55.
* ANC 6D: If you have enough juleps or vino on Saturday, you may decide to go to Monday's ANC 6D monthly business meeting, at 7 pm at 1100 4th St., SW (2nd floor).
* JOY EVANS PARK MEETING: Also previously mentioned is the May 10 public meeting on plans for the Joy Evans Park, at 6:30 pm at Van Ness Elementary.
And, the Nats arrive home on Monday, May 9 for three against the Tigers and then three against the Marlins.
What else is happening?

This is on Philz facebook page:

DC,
We had so much fun opening our first shop in DC, we thought we'd do it again! We are so excited to announce our newest DC Philz located at The Yards. We hope you will join us to celebrate on Friday May 13th from 11am-3pm for complimentary coffee and pastries.

Can't wait to see you there,
The Yards Team

Not sure where 6am came from. Looked up a tide chart last month and 9am is earliest high tide. But guess we'll get the official time soon.

JD says: (5/5/16 9:46 AM)
That's what they told the Post, though maybe that's just the start of the work to actually have it ready to move by 9ish.

JD says: (5/5/16 9:46 AM)
(I think I'll revise to fudge it a little more, until there's an announcement.)

JD says: (5/5/16 9:48 AM)
They also may need to get it moved earlier than high tide because of the need to have the Douglass Bridge swing span open.

JD says: (5/5/16 2:47 PM)
Updated departure time is now 7:15 am for the Barry, per Naval District Washington: link

Farewell to the USS (Marion) Barry.

JD says: (5/6/16 8:38 AM)
I want to leave the Barry as the top post until tomorrow, but the BID says that ORE 82 has signed Orangetheory Fitness as a tenant. There's 6,000 sq ft retail space in the building, but it wasn't said how much of that space Orangetheory is taking--though it looks like their studios are generally between 2,600 to 3,200 sq ft.

That's pretty significant news, JD. Thanks for the update! I've never been to one, but my friends who go to their studios rave about it. It should fit nicely into the neighborhood too inasmuch as there are so many young parents (or otherwise occupied people) who really could benefit from that gym's philosophy (i.e. I'd think the structured and high-intensity nature of it would be ideal for people who need to get the most out of their sixty-minute workout and don't necessarily want to waste mental energy figuring out what to do in a conventional gym).

Anybody else here that there is now no longer BYOB at Yards Park Summer Concerts?!

JD says: (5/6/16 9:43 AM)
Yes, another post in my pipeline. Alcohol will be sold there, but no outside alcoholic beverages can be brought in anymore. Also, they are moving the concerts over to the Great Lawn.

JD says: (5/6/16 10:48 AM)
If anyone *who lives in the neighborhood* wants to have a chat along the same lines as the comments thread from a few weeks ago about the neighborhood's character (or lack thereof), Martin Austermuhle of WAMU radio would like to talk to you. martin at wamu . org , or @maustermuhle on Twitter.

fgmtheatre says: (5/6/16 11:19 AM)
Is the new no BYOB at Yards just for the concerts or all the time? also any new news on the brig?

conngs0 says: (5/6/16 11:19 AM)
Sad news about the Yards Park summer concerts, but you knew it was coming given the increasing popularity of the concerts (no way organizers were going to resist that potential revenue stream!).

dude says: (5/6/16 1:57 PM)
How will they enforce that I wonder? Fence in the lawn and have bag checks? Eww.

JD says: (5/6/16 2:36 PM)
Thinking about making the ability to read my comments in these threads a Premium JDLand offering, so that at least if Other Media Outlets are going to just keep coming in here and then racing off to write posts from things I say without as much as a hat tip, I can get paid for it.

keith18 says: (5/7/16 11:36 AM)
No BYOB at the concerts?!? That's disappointing news. That was sort of the thing that kept me coming back.
