Page Through from Before to After

It's now official that the decommissioned USS Barry is in its final weeks at the Washington Navy Yard, with the Navy having announced that the ship is expected to be towed on May 7 down the Anacostia to the Potomac and then up to Philadelphia's "Inactive Ship Maintenance Office." It will then be dismantled and recycled for parts.
If you are wanting to wave farewell, be prepared to set your alarm--it's expected to start around 6 am. It will also require that the Douglass Bridge's span be raised rotated for it to pass through.
It was over a year ago that it was announced that the Barry would be leaving, with the Navy citing the ship's deteriorating condition along with the expectation of construction of a new fixed span Douglass Bridge leaving the Barry locked up river if it weren't moved beforehand.
(Would have been nice to get a credit for my photo of the Barry that the CNIC story used! Though now it's been replaced with a non-JDLand photo.)

I hate this so much. If it's just gonna be scrapped, who cares that they'd never be able to tow it out? Leave it for show.

You mean that the bridge's span will be rotated, not raised, right?

JD says: (4/12/16 9:45 AM)
Thanks, Chris, fixed.

I agree that this is a little sad. There's undoubtedly potential to spiff up the USS Barry to the point where it would be a fun element in the revitalized Anacostia waterfront area. However, I concede that I have no idea how many resources would have to be allocated to accomplish that (I gather the renovations and maintenance to the ship itself as well as the docks would be quite extensive). I'm definitely glad I got a few chances to explore the ship though. Despite not being the most historically significant ship in the U.S. fleet, it served during some very historically significant times. Who knows, maybe the Douglass Bridge won't rotate properly (I can't imagine they open it up a lot) and they'll have to keep the USS Barry where it is!

JD, I hope that this post is a sign that you're on the mend. Perhaps the upcoming sunny weather is just the ticket to completely recover and take a few more photos!

Thanks, @conngs0. I'm rid of the strep (which was ghastly) but now have a lingering cold w/chest congestion that the piles of penicillin for the strep do nothing for. This was the only post I could imagine spitting out with the least amount of energy. :)

Did they change the photo on the press release?

JD says: (4/12/16 4:23 PM)
Ah, yes, I see they did.

Official organizations need to learn that I *will* see it if they use one of my photos, and *will* call them out publicly.
