While their web site says that a "grand opening" is still a few weeks away, the rooftop lounge at the Hampton Inn dubbed "Top of the Yard" * is apparently open for business, starting at 5 pm every day and with extended hours on days where games at the ballpark start earlier.
With its location immediately north of Nats Park, and with a view of (most of) the field, it will probably be a destination of interest--and a few occupants were caught on camera during MASN's broadcasts this weekend, and I captured MASN capturing them on camera, as you see above.
The menu (scroll down on the official site) features burgers and hot dog-type offerings along with "snacks and shareables." According to the Post's Going Out Guide, the beer lineup is Budweiser-ish, with Bud, Shock Top, and Goose Island. The space will also be available to rent for private events.
I took some photos up on the roof back in December, right when the hotel opened, so the area wasn't quite finished yet, and the low winter sun made for less-than-optimal peeking into the ballpark, but here are some of those images, until I get up there to replace them. (Note that there are also lovely views of the rest of the neighborhood--see more photos here.)
I also hear tell that the Hampton is looking to open a sidewalk cafe where alcohol would be served.

* The logo on the official web site is "Top of the Yard," but all of the site's copy says "Top of the Yards." Looks like someone needs a copy editor.

Looks awesome! I bet that place will be so crowded. Open to the public I assume or do you just walk in like you own the place? I'd be surprised if the elevator doesn't require a room key (fob) to get to each floor.

When I went up there, I just got in the elevator and went to the roof, but the hotel had only been open for about 24 hours. I would think there has to be some level of security/herding/whatever. Anyone who ventures up there who wants to report back, please do!

We ventured up before the exhibition game last week. The landscaping, gas fire pit, service bar and seating are all really nice. The views are fantastic. The hotel staff was really excited to show it off and encouraged us to come back. We didn't stay for a drink but just wanted to check it out. I would say 50 people up there and it is going to be really tight.

My parents stayed at the Hampton last weekend and I met them for a drink on the roof. It is an impressive space but the service had a TON of kinks to work out. (The soda gun wasn't working--no vodka tonic for my mother--and it took way too long to process transactions.) It needs a lot more shaded areas (it was hot up there Friday afternoon) and they are going to need to tie down the chairs and cushions as they started blowing away in the higher wind. The elevators are going to be way overburdened. We waited for several minutes to get off the roof and there was not a huge crowd.

But if they get all that worked out, it is going to be quite popular.

Maybe people can take the stairs all the way to the top? That'd be a great workout for the legs and glutes in order to merit a beer or sangria! :-)

I've been up there twice now. It's really nice on a non-game day because it's not too crowded. The view is great.
There are a few things that seem to be not well thought out:
1. The landscaping is bizarre. They must have to have some percentage of "green" on the roof, because they placed rock gardens and plantings about 2 feet away from where you stand at the bar. See JD's image #3, then imagine bar stools & people standing there. This was not the only rock garden set in an inappropriate place.
2. Facing the ballpark, and one other location, the railings were glass. Fantastic. But facing the river -- a BEAUTIFUL view, the railing is just an ugly brown wall -- and about 5 feet high, so you cannot see over it unless you stand right next to it in, you guessed it, a pile of rocks and plantings.
3. Last night when I was there, the workers were watering the trees in tree boxes by hauling a cleaning bucket over to each tree and then using pitchers to transfer the water. Really? no irrigation system? strange!

The furniture is nice, but they had to remove the cushions due to wind. Some chairs are fine without, but some are too low without the cushions.

Bathrooms are nice and even on a game day they were well-maintained.

Elevators took much too long. 5 or 6 minutes to get in an elevator! And by the time it came, a huge crowd had gathered behind us.

Recommend going there before the crowds figure out they can go there. And according to the website, they will be pushing private events, which would be fantastic during a game!
