 Sliding from Before to After

I think a couple of before-and-afters tell the story as well as a pile of words. First, looking west from 2nd Street SE on Feb. 3, 2005, and then today, Feb. 8, 2016:
And the reverse view, looking east from New Jersey on Feb. 23, 2004 and today, Feb. 8, 2016:
And here's a few more shots, because I'm a crazy woman. Note that the sidewalks on the south and west sides of the Park Chelsea are now open, meaning that you can now walk on the east side of New Jersey north of I--at least until you get to the fences that mark the Agora/Whole Foods project, at which point you'd need to cross back to the west.
In case you haven't been around, it was the former DPW/trash transfer station, demolished in 2012, that long ago was built on a diagonal footprint, created from back when the Washington Canal was dug.
And now I at last will be able to photograph the intersections of 2nd and I and New Jersey and I without having to walk down to K and back up to I. And bike to Southwest without having to do the same down-and-back.
I would note, though, that pedestrians and cyclists need to be veeeeeery careful at this intersection--I saw a lot of confusion this morning, and of course the continuing construction right up to the property line at 82 I adds to the difficulties.

Drove past this a bit ago, it really ties that little section the neighborhood together. Looks great.

I don't have words for how excited this makes me. Been waiting for this for YEARS.

JD says: (2/8/16 1:41 PM)
Let me be clear: no one has been waiting longer than I have. :)

RMP says: (2/8/16 2:05 PM)
I can't wait to try out that bike lane. I also wonder how long it will take before Google Maps fills in this block.

willinrm says: (2/8/16 3:01 PM)
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! That fence made my walk to Harry's 4 times longer than it had to be!!

GG says: (2/8/16 3:18 PM)
Agree that the intersection is a bit nuts right now - even for cars too. I hope that when construction ends at Park Chelsea and Greystar later this year it becomes a better intersection. I could even see a traffic light there somewhere down the road. But still will make getting around much easier!

JES says: (2/8/16 3:22 PM)
If only someone could make WCS build one of those temporary pedestrian tunnels in front of the Whole Foods site so we could walk on that side of the sidewalk to reach Capitol South...

In other news that people have been waiting for, it looks like PN Hoffman's condo building at 4th and Tingey has an approved shoring/sheeting/excavation permit now. And 1244 South Capitol's gotten its foundation permit.

dude says: (2/8/16 7:33 PM)
I'm interested to see how this effects my short drive from 4th and L to the 3rd street 395 exit on the mornings.

E. Masquinongy says: (2/9/16 9:21 AM)
Really dumb question: will H Street similarly be re-connected?

JD says: (2/9/16 9:25 AM)
Yes, the new H Street is already built through, just waiting the end of the Agora contruction.

BillP says: (2/9/16 9:56 AM)
Now that this is open, could somebody could finally shame DC into building sidewalks on the remainder of its property directly to the south of this block?

Square 739 - the eastern edge (west side of 2nd street) facing canal park and the southern edge (north side of K street) facing CHT.

God forbid if this were private land and this had not been done, oh, say a decade ago. This should have been years ago but hopefully the opening of the northern border of Square 739 provides somebody an entry to get this done sometime in the next decade.

JD says: (2/9/16 9:57 AM)
I think Meredith Fascett recently mentioned that there's a plan to do this in coming months.

JES says: (2/9/16 11:10 AM)
PN Hoffman's condo building should start the presale phase soon, shouldn't it? Don't condo developers usually start that around the same time they break ground?

JD says: (2/9/16 11:16 AM)
Sign says that sales will start Spring 2016, so....

JD says: (2/9/16 2:53 PM)
I've updated the "slider" for the view west on I from 2nd Street:

This is our own little Panama Canal for the hood. The JDlandama Canal?

@BillP: there's supposed to be a new sidewalk on that block by April

CJBabyDaddy says: (2/9/16 3:27 PM)
JDLandama Canal? I've been told I bear a certain likeness, so if nobody minds, I want to play JDLandamanian strongman Manuel Noriega in the inevitable TV mini-series.

JD says: (2/9/16 5:13 PM)
@CJ, you have my approval.

I guess I'm Teddy Roosevelt. :-)
