 Sliding from Before to After

The neighborhood's second hotel has now officially arrived, with the Hampton Inn and Suites at 1265 1st Street SE having opened to guests on Thursday, Dec. 17.
I wandered in off the streets without the official JDLand camera, but my S6 stood in pretty well as I took some quick photos of the public areas, and of the views off the roof deck, even though that space doesn't appear 100 percent ready yet. (The door was unlocked, honest!)
The official web site for the location probably tells you more than I can about amenities, etc. It looks like the rates are pretty low for dates over the coming days (starting at $99 if you arrived on Monday the 21st), but I'm guessing that won't be the case for long. And there are rooms that are specifically labeled "Ballpark view."
I tossed together a photo gallery that isn't exactly a barn-burner, but here are a few highlights. Apologies that the shots of the ballpark from the roof are ghastly, but I pretty much couldn't have picked a worse time of day in December to try to take photos to the south-southwest. I think you can get the idea.
As for the space at street level between the wings of the hotel, directly on the corner, that land is not part of the Hampton footprint--it's part of the Grosvenor F1rst/Residence Inn project immediately to the north, and will eventually be home to a two-story retail building, which you can see in this F1rst rendering that helpfully doesn't include the Hampton Inn.

View into the park isn't too bad from the roof.

Is that $43 for one night of parking?

JD says: (12/20/15 10:13 AM)
Yes, one night of parking. There's no on-site parking, so it's all valet, and I imagine they go over to the Yards surface lot to the southeast.

SWag says: (12/20/15 6:18 PM)
The rendering looks like a red brick building, but the staging material they have currently on site looks like a yellow/tan/brown building. The rendering (esp with the ugly hotel in the background) looks much better imo

This is from the Capitol Hill listserve-- absolutely terrible news. If anyone has information about this, please contact MPD.

"Dear members,

I was carjacked and assaulted by 2-3 guys around 9:30pm at L street between 3rd and 4th street, SE Washington, DC on Friday December 18, 2015.

I was taken to the GW hospital ER Room by the police around 10:00pm.

I suffered one broken nose bone, few broken jaw bones, broken left lips and 2 broken teeth. I also suffered a big blow to my back head. I had an oral surgery and 12 stitches on my lips and still have severe headache. I was released from hospital Sunday afternoon, December 20, 2015. It will take a few months and additional 2-3 surgeries in order for me to recover.

I lost my iPhone, car, wallet and some other personal items inside of the car.

My car is a silver Honda Civic EX sedan with 4 doors and a moon roof with DC plate number EG2475.

Please contact me or call the police if you happened to see the car.

Please share this information. Thank you.

Sincerely, "

We wondered why the police seemed to have that area blocked off on Friday. Terrible is right.

Early in the fall Charles Allen said he was looking into the ability for the city to pay for cameras (like a NestCam) that people could put up at their houses to help out with this kind of thing. Or at least provide some kind of monetary help. Be great if only one or two people had something like this on that block.

Report on the ID mailing list:

On Friday December 18, 2015, at 9:00PM members of the First District responded to the 300 block of L Street, SE for the report of a carjacking (unarmed).

The complainant in this case states that she had just parked her vehicle and was removing items from within the trunk when two suspects approached her from the rear. One of the suspects’ punched the complainant in the head causing her to fall to the ground. The suspects then entered the complainant’s vehicle and fled the scene.

Both suspects were described as black males wearing dark gray hoodies. The complainant’s vehicle is described as a 2004 Honda Civic, silver in color, bearing DC registration.

Anyone with information about the above case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text message 50411.

@JD, et al:

I hope the suspects are apprehended and I hope they spend a long time in jail.

JHUGrad says: (12/21/15 10:34 AM)
This is terrible. Capitol Quarter neighbors should organize a community meeting with Ward 6 leadership and the police to discuss ways going forward to address the rise of crime in the city. This is been a relatively safe and quiet part of the city, and I want it to stay that way.

conngs0 says: (12/21/15 3:14 PM)
It's indeed very scary to know something like this has taken place in your neighborhood. However, given the events in Hill East and nearby, I can't say this comes as much of a surprise. I totally agree with JHUGrad that the folks around CQ should continue to be not just vigilant but also involved in the area's security. The neighborhood association already pays for a security service to monitor the area, but the footprint is of course too big for one guy on a golf cart to cover all the time.

Westnorth says: (12/21/15 4:04 PM)
Do I spy a rooftop bar atop this Hampton Inn? Wonder how that'll work, given that it's a limited-service hotel -- e.g., they don't even have a way to sell food, much less alcohol. Maybe it'll be run by a caterer only on game days. (Same question applies to the Hyatt Place in SW.)

G Street says: (12/21/15 4:59 PM)
Thought the $43 was for = a room. (Guess not)

Sorry to hear about the robbery.

conngs0 says: (12/22/15 9:18 AM)
G Street, before I read that sign a little closer, I was worried that the Hampton Inn hadn't received the memo that this neighborhood was "up and coming" and that the $43 referred to an hourly rate! In all seriousness, I hope the lack of onsite parking doesn't serve as too much of a deterrent for people to stay there. Clearly the company didn't think it would be, and there are plenty of transportation options to/from the area. Nevertheless, people sure do like to bring their cars on trips with them but may not want to shell out that much for offsite parking...

Westnorth, good question re: the rooftop bar. I don't see why a hotel in that location wouldn't want to invest in the capability of running a rooftop bar there (even if to license the rights to use space to another entity in the future). It's interesting that the hotel's website doesn't include any easily found reference to the roof deck, so perhaps this is indeed something they are still working out. That bar area sure looks tiny though (made more so by the landscaping only a few feet away from the bar - would be interesting to see how slightly inebriated traffic navigates those bushes!), so it wouldn't surprise me if it's just a special event space to be catered.

I'll do an actual post about this closer to the date, but for now, those of you reading the comments may be interested. You should also be on the MPD-1D Yahoo group if you are interested in police-related updates. This is from Eva Walter (evawalter1 at gmail)

Hello Neighbors,

PSA #106 monthly meeting times have been changed. We have a lot to talk about and the first item on the agenda will be welcoming PSA #106’s Lieutenant Avery. Lt. Avery has made a compelling case for moving the meeting times to a weeknight:

"Having the meetings on a weekday at 7:00 P.M. is beneficial in many ways. By having the meeting during this time and during the weekday, we will be able to invite other agencies such as: Housing Authority, Office of Attorney General, CSOSA, business owners and other stakeholders, who really should be more involved in these meetings. Usually during PSA meetings, stakeholders are able to brainstorm, voice concerns and come up with solutions regarding crime patterns and order maintenance issues."

Sounds like our PSA will get some much-needed attention with the return of a permanent PSA Manager. And the 3 ANC Commissioners who service PSA #106 (Meredith, Daniel, and Kirsten) have been working towards making our meetings more successful and productive.

Our first meeting will be Wednesday, January 6 at 7pm.
A location is yet to be determined, but we’re working on it. I’ll send out a notification once we’ve found a location.

To add to the unfortunate topic discussed earlier in this thread, there was quite a bit of police activity on Eye Street near the intersection with 3rd Place this afternoon right around 5pm. Didn't see anything on the DCMPD Twitter page but I saw a guy in handcuffs. On the bright side, it was good to see so many police officers responding to whatever happened, and it seems like the presence has increased lately.
