Sliding from Before to After
A Look Back, eight years ago today: The southwest corner of 1st and M Streets, SE, with Normandie Liquors long closed and in its final few months.* SIDE YARDS: Back for a second year is " Side Yards," an "evening of quirky amusement and wonder" showcasing top sideshow performers at the Yards Park on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 6 to 10 pm. Contortionists, magicians, juggling, escape artists and snake handling will all be showcased (sounds like a typical day in Congress!). There will also be burlesque acts, live music, and a beer garden. Tickets are free, but available in advance. * DC BEER FESTIVAL: Also on Saturday, Nov. 7 is the DC Beer Festival at Nats Park. Admission is $40 and includes unlimited tastings (wheeeee!). * THE NEW VIRGINIA AVE. PARK: ANC 6B commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg looks at the ideas that came out of last month's public meeting to come up with a post-tunnel-construction design for Virginia Avenue Park. * THE OLD VIRGINIA AVE. (NOT) PARK: And speaking of Virginia Avenue between 9th and 10th streets, SE, this week's Lost Capitol Hill series on The Hill is Home looks at the owner of a lumber yard in that spot during the mid-1800s. * MOBILE: I've been tweaking the mobile version of the JDLand home page to add some of the items that have only been on the desktop page--a random Look Back photo, the Highlighted Projects development map, and even the Latest Tweets box. Ai-yi-yi, that building. (now without its turret!) In 2011 Madison Marquette partnered with owner ICP Properties on it, perhaps because they were thinking the Marines would end up eminent domain'ing that block for their new BEQ. With that now going to the existing annex site, and with Madison now no longer owning the Blue Castle, I wonder if they just decided to cut losses.
ICP bought them in 2006, and tried to sell in 2008 in as well.

Not related to any of this, but does anyone know what the ground-shaking hammering was that woke me up at 7:45 this morning? Went on intermittently for about half an hour if I remember correctly, but I am pretty fuzzy before 8:30.

Must be nice to wake up at 7:45 on a weekday.... I am more concerned about the 3 AM Saturday morning concrete pours that there have been at some of the lots recently.

My stringer has passed along a photo that shows workers in one of the retail bays along the Riverwalk (in the base of the overlook by the Lumber Shed)--maybe Nicoletta is at last getting going?

If they have permits for 3am concrete pours, that's not on them; it's on the city for granting them. Seriously, why do they keep allowing construction companies to do this in an area that's so residential? Can the ANC or the BID or someone start leaning on the city to stop that crap?

@JES: I agree that the fault likely is with the city employee who approved this. More broadly, I would prefer if the construction started an hour later in the mornings but continued to 6 PM instead of 5 PM.

Exciting news about Nicoletta! I'm always on the lookout for a good takeaway pizza place. The only good one I've found in DC is Vace up in Cleveland Park, which isn't exactly a viable option for folks living down in Navy Yard. Between that and the newly renovated Park Tavern, hopefully one winds up as a winner! Construction timing is a tough subject with some conflicting priorities. Obviously 3am is ridiculous. However, I imagine that some of the timing has to do with getting construction vehicles and personnel out of the way for rush hour. Regardless, given the inevitable (but temporary) inconvenience associated with new construction, I'm generally in favor of whatever solution brings the projects to completion as quickly as possible.
