 Sliding from Before to After

I get distracted with other things for, like, a minute, and all of a sudden the Capper Community Center on 5th Street SE between K and L starts looking like a real building!
The masonry work appears all but completed on the south end, where the gymnasium will be. If you compare these photos to the rendering, you'll see that most of the "holes" left in the construction are where glass or exterior flourishes are planned.
As for the picture at bottom right, it was my not-particularly successful attempt to show in a single shot the progress at the Community Center, the current state of the Lofts at Capitol Quarter a block away, and the boarded up windows signaling renovations at Van Ness Elementary.
(These blah pictures also show why I generally avoid taking photos when it's overcast or hazy or humid or, heaven forbid, all three. I also pretty much turned into Frosty the Snowman in the greenhouse in the brief time it took to take them.)

That place is going to do a phenomenal business in the summertime for sure. And probably winter too (especially if they deliver and serve pizza anywhere north of 6 on the 1-10 scale).

And yeah, awesome work by Max Scherzer! It's too bad those thunderstorms rolled through right after Saturday's game and doused what surely would have been a fun celebration around the neighborhood. I sure hope Jose Tabata heard it from the crowd on Sunday for leaning into that pitch at the end of the game!

I like the way the Community Center and Van Ness Elementary are shaping up too. They both have the potential to add a tremendous value to the community. Looking forward to seeing the inside!

Construction update: I saw that the construction workers are pouring the foundation for the tower crane at 909 Half Street this week.

I also noticed there was a tractor/shovel clearing the large lot behind McDonalds. Someone stated before that this is owned by CSX but it appears to be a separate parcel from the current CSX construction activity.

Given how short that Bardo beer garden is on their funding progress, I'd be pretty shocked if they opened this year. Perhaps when the Fairgrounds property is closed off for development, there will be enough momentum to fill that void in the market to open up another beer garden. Until then, what's the point of trying to open for the playoffs? I'm personally not in favor of anything that even hints at the expectation for a long October run for the Nats - their history of early playoff exits eliminates any karma debit they could possibly have!
