It's hard to believe that in a few months the first batch of students will return to Van Ness Elementary, for the first time since 2006. With initial renovations and plans for the 2015-16 school year underway, the school is hosting a "Showcase" community meeting on Wednesday, June 17, from 6 to 8 pm.
Note that it is at 200 I St., SE, not at the school itself.
The Head of School, Cynthia Robinson-Rivers, will be there, as will the initial teachers. The interior and exterior renovation plans will also be on display, as will the new playground designs.
The school is opening with PK-3, PK-4, and kindergarten classes, with plans to add one grade each year until 5th grade is reached.

DCPS did a great job. The group met the new Head of School and teachers, saw renderings of what the building will look like, talked curriculum and there was a very informative Q&A. The Van Ness faculty is a winning team.

Good to hear. The higher the number of solid elementary schools inches the city closer to developing a great overall K-12 school system (or at least one can only hope!). Either way, a thriving Van Ness Elementary can only mean positive things for the neighborhood. I hope their first year gets them off on the right foot!

Was very impressed with the new head of school. A really great teaching staff has been put together. The school is going to a huge asset to the neighborhood.
