Hull at M, Looking East (see more)

"Honey, what do you want to do when you grow up?"
"I want to peek through construction fences to take pictures of huge holes in the ground!"
While I'm pretty sure this wasn't on my childhood list of aspirations, I'll still present to you the latest JDLand State of the Dirt report.
From oldest hole to newest hole, we have residential projects 800 New Jersey/Whole Foods*, Florida Rock/Riverfront, 1111 New Jersey/Galley at Capitol Riverfront, 909 Half, and 82 I, then the Homewood Suites at 50 M, and finally the F1rst/First residential and Residence Inn combo.
* If you are wondering about the new one-story structure at the far left of the above photo that has popped alongside the Park Chelsea and the 800 NJ excavation, which you can, it is the "covered vehicle court" that will serve the garage and loading docks for these two projects and the eventual third building on the block.
If you wish for more context with any of these photos, follow the links up top to go to the project pages.

That certainly was what I wanted to be when I grew up!

Nothing about Kepler? :)

JD says: (4/27/15 12:47 PM)
It's not in a hole, is it? :)

'Covered vehicle court' is something you'd expect in Reston, not here in a walkable neighborhood.

Thanks for the photos-- when are we going to start seeing some new tower cranes, esp. for the 1111 NJ Ave development?

JD says: (4/27/15 12:58 PM)
You generally don't see tower cranes until it's about time for vertical construction. You can see the beginnings of the crane base in the Florida Rock image.

And "covered vehicle court"!= carport for parking.

JES says: (4/27/15 4:23 PM)
I think "covered vehicle court" here means "place for trucks to park and load, and place for vehicles to enter garages to be shared by 3 buildings." To me, that's a pretty efficient use of space, if that means that each building doesn't need its own separate loading dock that can fit giant moving trucks. It may also mean that each building doesn't need its own separate curb cut to serve the underground garages, which is also a positive, especially from a pedestrian perspective.

Though JD, correct me if I'm wrong.

JD says: (4/27/15 4:49 PM)
Yep, that is my understanding of the general idea.

MJM says: (4/28/15 3:35 PM)
Hopefully Toll Bros reads this about loading docks or covered vehicle court because they sure lack it for their new building and will probably for the next one.
