If your tastebuds are on the lookout for additional options in the neighborhood, tell them that I am hearing that Taylor Gourmet and Chop't are slated to be tenants in the pending Grosvenor-McCaffery-Skanska mega project along 1st Street SE between M and N currently dubbed Ballpark Square.*
But said tastebuds will need to be patient, as the project is still a few weeks away from an expected ceremonial groundbreaking, and then it will take a while to construct the project's 285-unit apartment building, 180-room hotel, and 233,000-square-foot office building in the block just north of Nats Park.
All told, there will be about 45,000 square feet of retail across the project, with about 7,000 of it in the separate two-story 7,000 square feet retail building at the corner of 1st and N, also being developed by Grosvenor/McCaffery.
The rendering at right showing the 99 M office building, the hotel, and the residential building as seen from the northwest corner of 1st and M may help get your bearings on the location and plans.
No operator for the hotel has been announced as yet. (And note, as always, that this is separate from the Hampton Inn currently going up on the south end of the block.)
* I've also heard that "Ballpark Square" is actually not the final name of the development. This allows me to yet again point people to my June 2007 post, Name Your Own Near Southeast Development Project!

This is awesome. I wonder if we'll have sufficient neighborhood population by then to have a Taylor with extended late night hours like the one on H Street.

Pretty good news. I would have been more stoked if a Capriotti's was coming to the neighborhood, but Taylor does a solid job and their arancini are tough to beat.

Indeed! I'm sure we'll get at least another sandwich spot. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to wish for my personal favorite. Although... I wouldn't be disappointed if a lesser known entrepreneur decided to try to enter the market. For instance, I'd think something like A. Litteri, Vace, or the Italian Store would do very well in the neighborhood, and it seems like their footprint lines up pretty well with a lot of the retail spaces in these new buildings.

And in the documents that led me to the Taylor/Chop't news, there's a hint of another restaurant coming nearby (not at Ballpark Square), but since it appeared to be second-hand info, I'm not going to post about it. If true, however, it would be wild news. *If true.*

My neck already feels stuck out with this Taylor/Chop't news (though I confirmed it with the leasing director), so I am remaining mum until I get confirmation elsewhere. I do try to refrain from reporting rumors....

Speaking of rumors, it seems strange that there haven't been more centered around converting that building just south of the DOT in Tingey Plaza (Building 170?) into something - especially now that it's surrounded projects that are finished or in the pipeline. Anyway, sorry to go off topic, but I've always liked that building and been fascinated by the fact that it's only been used for some weird art exhibit and I think a random showing of cars so far. The wasted potential is disappointing.
