 Page Through from Before to After

With possession and cultivation of small amounts of marijuana becoming legal in DC on Thursday, the Washington Post helpfully mapped out all of the federally owned tracts of land in the city, since pot possession will still most decidedly not be legal on federal land.
So, in the interest of providing pertinent information to my readers, I zoomed the map in to show these locations in and around Near Southeast, of which there are many. The Navy Yard is one such spot, obviously (see how that "The" comes in handy?), but so is Canal Park, Virginia Avenue Park, the Marine Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, DC Water's land, various lots around the Yards including parts of the Yards Park, and the government warehouse at Half and L. Not to mention all of the shoreline east of 11th Street, plus Garfield Park, Randall Recreation Center, and a whole host of other public spaces nearby.
While the map shows you where possession will be illegal, it's not like the new law is allowing public consumption, federal land or not: "D.C. police will be instructed to continue ticketing for public smoking of marijuana, a ticket akin to drinking in public, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine."
In fact, it's probably best to read this other Post story, along with the FAQ and fact sheet released by the city--to find out exactly what is and isn't legal. But here's the basics:
As of Thursday, any individual 21 or over can:
* Possess two ounces or less of marijuana;
* Use marijuana on private property;
* Transfer one ounce or less of marijuana to another person, as long as: (1) no money, goods or services are exchanged; and (2) the recipient is 21 years of age or older;
* Cultivate within his or her primary residence up to six marijuana plants, no more than three of which are mature.
However, it will still be illegal to:
* Possess more than two ounces of marijuana;
* Smoke or otherwise consume marijuana on public space or anywhere to which the public is invited; including restaurants, bars, and coffee shops;
* Sell any amount of marijuana to another person; or
* Operate a vehicle or boat under the influence of marijuana.
UPDATE: The mayor's FAQ notes that it will remain illegal to smoke in public housing residences.

I'm curious about how this applies to renters; do landlords have the right to ban marijuana from their property? Presumably that is negotiable in the lease, but what about those tenants whose lease is already in place?

JD says: (2/24/15 3:22 PM)
From the FAQ:

Q. I’m a renter; can I smoke marijuana in my apartment?
A. In most instances, that’s up to you and your landlord. But, if you live in public housing the answer is no.

(Which makes me realize I need to add a little to this post!)

"However, it will still be illegal to: Operate a vehicle or boat under the influence of marijuana."

So much for giving the DS Barry a proper send-off.

In other words. Don't be stupid and try to smoke it outside (you might be in a federal land and you probably didn't know it). Just smoke the joint in your house.

Thanks! That's what I guessed. Wonder if I'll have a memo under the door on Thursday...

The Feds will never want pot or any drugs legalized due to huge profits from laundering cartel drug money:

JD: I thought Garfield Park was a DC park, not federal land. Tony my knowledge it's managed by DCRA even if the land is federal.

ZoolanderANDtheBoYz says: (2/25/15 8:06 AM)
Can a city police enforce a federal law?
I am just saying, how often do you see the park police patrolling the Garfield park or the yards park?

JD says: (2/25/15 9:20 AM)
Control of the Yards Park was ceded to the city, even though it's on federal land. Ditto Canal Park, and I *think* it's the same with Garfield Park. (Marion Park at 4th and E is definitely still a federal holding.)

In other news, I see that the Community Center finally got its above-ground building permit yesterday.

(And the Homewood Suites got its foundation permit a few days ago, after already having their shoring permit. I'm surprised there hasn't been action there yet.)

1015 Half St has office desks on the second floor and plastic on windows of 3-6 - work is slowly coming along there. And few weeks ago a new leasing company sign went up out front.

David T. says: (2/25/15 12:12 PM)
It seems to me that the helpful map from the Post could also double as a guide to which sidewalks will be unshoveled and remain untreated following a winter weather event in DC.

ZoolanderANDtheBoYz says: (2/25/15 12:28 PM)
Construction started at 82I and 909 seems ahead of schedule. I don't why the sound of the construction excites me? I don't why ballpark square and Homewood is taking too long (sad face).

JD says: (2/25/15 12:52 PM)
I should have some Ballpark Square deets later today.

JD says: (2/25/15 12:52 PM)
And, @David T., I may have to create a JDLand comment "Like" system just for your effort. :)

JD says: (2/25/15 2:18 PM)
@MJM, the new leasing company at 1015 is actually just the new name of the old leasing company (Cassidy Turley).

Someone was smoking a spliff this morning in the Navy Yard metro station.

tspaquin says: (2/27/15 9:59 AM)
Since pot smoking in any public space, whether DC or Federal land, is still a crime, the distinction between the two would seem to be irrelevant, aside from who would be issuing the ticket or doing the arresting.
