Sliding from Before to After
Next up on the Near Southeast Cavalcade of Eateries appears to be Bonchon, the Korean fried chicken outlet that is opening its first DC location on the southwest corner of Half and K streets SE, inside the 1015 Half Street building a couple of blocks north of Nats Park. I sent my unpaid stringer out in the dismal weather today to grab a photo or two of the work on the 5,300-square-foot space, which sources say has been progressing rapidly, perhaps with an eye toward opening before, well, Opening Day ( Monday, April 6). Eater DC shared some renderings and details about the interior, though reading that the architects are "designing the restaurant to include a sports bar" -- I've never heard of a "sports bar" as an object within a restaurant rather than just an appellation for a restaurant, but maybe I don't move in the right circles. Nevertheless, Eater says that there will be seating for 200, and that the full bar will have "both Asian and American craft beers." Anyone wishing to thank my stringer for his work can probably arrange a meeting at 100 Montaditos. (A small update on another restaurant in the pipeline: the planned Scarlet Oak at 909 New Jersey still does not have its necessary building permits, but they are at least in process.)

Very excited for this. I was at the Arlington location on Saturday and asked one of the managers there about this location and he said the hope was that they would have the restaurant ready for them by mid March and then would need 2 weeks of training before opening. That timeline aligns pretty well with what you are hearing. Hopefully they don't run into delays and can stick to the timeline.
Shogungts says: (1/14/15 8:44 PM)
...seeing your linked source, it's nice to see a Gator, Nole and Hurricane all working together.
ZoolanderANDtheBoYz says: (1/14/15 9:50 PM)
All this time I was thinking it will be on L street linkI guess not!
JD says: (1/14/15 11:08 PM)
There is something about K and L that make them easy to get conflated--but that David Garber statement was pretty definitive ( link and then I talked with the building's leasing folks and they told me CBS would be on K and Bonchon on L. So, I had it wrong, but I would have thought that those would two pretty solid sources to have been leaning on.
David Garber says: (1/15/15 10:07 AM)
Good to know, re: K/L! Strange that everyone seemed to have it mixed up... I'll have to swing by next time I'm in the hood to reset my bearings.

restaurant would open in this neighborhood. Even if the concept isn't inherently 'sports bar' in nature (think 100 Montaditos), it seems that all restauranteurs coming to this area think the only way they can attract clientele is to mount giant flat screens on their walls. Some residents actually value and seek out places to relax and dine without ESPN blaring in the background.
ScoopDC says: (1/15/15 11:27 AM)
For some reason the first line of the post above was cut off. It read "It would be nice if a non-sports bar restaurant would open in this neighborhood."
JES says: (1/15/15 12:11 PM)
Osteria Morini only has one TV, so there's that. Agua also does a decent job separating their dining area (which has no TVs) from their bar area. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I went to any restaurant in this town that was entirely devoid of TVs in their bar areas; however, there are many that don't have TVs in their dining room areas at least, which seems like the best compromise we're going to get in our neighborhood (and honestly, until more of these new buildings get completed and fully leased, retailers down here do have to depend on the Nats crowd for a substantial portion of their profits; I can't blame them at all for catering to them).
conngs0 says: (1/15/15 1:57 PM)
Apologies for the off-topic post, but this struck me as sufficiently disconcerting (alarming?) to serve as a reminder to everyone to be careful when walking or riding through the neighborhood. I am sure more details will emerge, but hopefully the police will apprehend the suspect(s) soon and this type of event can be nipped in the bud. link
Ampersand says: (1/15/15 4:55 PM)
@JES - it might be sacrilege to mention an out-of-the-area bar, but I was at Right Proper in Shaw the other night specifically because they don't have a single TV in their bar or dining area, as best as I can tell.
conngs0 says: (1/16/15 11:58 AM)
Thanks for the heads up! Definitely a strange occurrence of the neighborhood, especially with two stabbings in the same general proximity. I wonder what the law enforcement response will be.
JD says: (1/17/15 8:55 AM)
Scarlet Oak's building/tenant layout permit has now been approved. "NEW TENANT LAYOUT FOR NEW 3754 SF RESTAURANT. PARTITION PLAN NEW COMMERCIAL KITCHEN BAR MILL WORK AND DINING AREA INCLUDED NO OUT SIDE SEATING ON THIS PERMIT." Approvals are for 96 seats, with 64 table seats and 36 bar-area seats.
