 Sliding from Before to After

At 5:30 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the ribbon will be cut and Harris Teeter, the neighborhood's first grocery store, will at last open at 4th and M, SE. And, after the ceremonies and a free tasting event that runs until 8 pm, the store will be open for shopping until midnight, and then will open at 6 am Wednesday for its first full day.
And of course heaven forbid that I'd just wait until the doors open to the public--the folks at Teeter were nice enough to give my camera a quick tour, while dodging the hive of activity that you can imagine marks a 50,000-square-foot grocery store 24 hours before it opens.
I took way too many photos of something that will just become part of the neighborhood's fabric quite quickly, but, well, it was fun.
Check out the gallery. There's a lot more than just these.
UPDATE: Since the numbers just arrived, I thought I'd mention that this store is 6,000 square feet larger than the Jenkins Row store at 14th and Pennsylvania, SE, and basically the same size as the one at 1st and M, NE.

One thing I will say might be an issue: that front door and vestibule is pretty tight. I can definitely see it being congested at peak times.

With a Starbucks in the HT, are they still planning on keeping the one in the DOT building open? I know many people complained about lack of Wi-Fi at that location; I'm assuming the new one will have it.

Also, I can't begin to describe how great it will be to have a grocery store in the neighborhood. I've been counting down the days until I never have to go and stand in the ridiculous lines at the Safeway in SW or schlep up to the HT on Jenkins Row (yes, it's definitely a schlep if you don't own a car).

There's definitely WiFi in the Teeter--whether it's the Teeter Wifi, or AT&T WiFi, or both I don't know.

And in the interest of full disclosure, this opening has been long awaited in the JDLand household as well. Though I am not the one who does the vast majority of the grocery shopping. (We have this magic chalkboard in the kitchen--I write what I need on it, and within 48 hours or so, my groceries suddenly appear. It's amazing!)

Gemini in DC says: (11/4/14 2:11 PM)
Wow - sure wish that I had a magic chalkboard for groceries! Lucky you!

Soooo...until Whole Foods opens its Organic Beer Bar I guess HT is a worthwhile source for fine ale.

JD says: (11/4/14 2:59 PM)
I can't believe no one's asked for a huge zoomed crop of the beer shelf yet.

MJM says: (11/5/14 9:02 AM)
The beer selection rocks. So many (new) beers I had never seen before.

Alan says: (11/5/14 9:19 AM)
The beer selection is nuts. Harry's still has the liquor market cornered, but they're gonna have to play ball with HT's beer prices. Looking forward to not seeing every craft beer priced above $10 at Harry's.

Thank goodness the milk is fresh (as the sign says). However, I now worry about the produce area, as that isn't designated as such.

Does anyone know the parking situation? Is it a validation? Or are there parking meters like at Jenkins Row? Free first hour?
