 Sliding from Before to After

Just out from City Paper's Young and Hungry, the news that has been rattling around as rumor for weeks: "The official tree of the District of Columbia--Scarlet Oak--will be the name of an American restaurant coming to 909 New Jersey Ave. SE from the owners of Adams Morgan's Southern Hospitality."
City Paper says "the menu will have some carryover from Southern Hospitality, including the fried chicken and chicken and waffles. But there will also be new stuff like pizzas and flatbreads. Drinks will include specialty cocktails and a large wine by the glass and beer selection." There will be about 100 seats, plus another 75 on the huge patio outside the space on the northwest corner of New Jersey and K.
(By the way, CP, it's not actually directly across from the Whole Foods site. Basically two blocks away.)
This will be the second tenant at the 909 apartment building, which was completed in 2009. Harry's Reserve Wine and Spirits opened there in 2011.
A December or January opening date is cited, but We Shall See.

I am glad to see that something is actually, finally, coming to that space. And, I know that they didn't wait until I moved out before making this announcement... But the timing is suspicious.

Southern Hospitality does a half-decent job in Adams Morgan, and I think that concept can work very well in the Navy Yard area year round. Maybe they can even work out a BYOB arrangement with Harry's!

And hopefully the flow of foot traffic takes enough customers there to make it a successful venture (it's interesting to see how many people bypass Park Tavern, which is much closer to the Metro and to other establishments; of course, the sparse turnout at Park Tavern nowadays can also be attributed to poor service, mediocre food, and a fairly drab-looking building, but it doesn't seem like that place ever drew as significant of a crowd as its location should warrant).

BYOB, sadly, will probably never fly, given how much of a restaurant's profit margin typically comes from alcohol.

That said, I also liked Southern Hospitality the one time we went, so I'm looking forward to this place.

Considering their other place (Southern Hospitality), this will probably have more of a bar than a restaurant focus. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Probably best for that location. Neighborhood bar with a little more elbow room than Justin's.
