The dinosaur is gone, the bat is gone, the soulless brown-bricks-instead-of-windows are gone, and all that's left is just a few final smidgens of what was once Building 213.

And, in other news worth noting, TaKorean at Twelve12 has its sign up and doesn't look too far from opening, and the first hints of vertical construction have peeked out above the fence at the Hampton Inn site at 1st and N. (That's how fast things can go when you're not digging out three levels of underground parking.)

Hey, we could solve that open space problem by just convincing the city to cough up tens of millions of dollars for the land. That won't be too hard, right?

I think the neighborhood has some great open spaces in the form of Canal Park and Yards Park! Plus, Garfield Park is easily accessible (and that access won't be inhibited at all by the CSX construction project!).

At the moment, the only "open space problem" is that there are too many empty lots awaiting development. At the rate some of these projects (especially office buildings, which is currently on tap for this site, no?) are conceived and then implemented/completed, we should be enjoying the temporary park, parking lot and NY Trapeze School for quite some time. And even when/if an office building is constructed, is out of the question for the zoning commission to require the plans to incorporate at least some outdoor space for occupants and passers by?

We do have a decent amount of parkland here (more than a lot of other neighborhoods with the same types of density), but I do worry that it's not really adequate. Yards Park is already jammed on nice weekend days, and we have how many more giant residential buildings on the books to open by ~2017? That, plus the fact that the green space at Yards Park is actually going to shrink to make room for more retail pavilions, and it makes me wonder how crowded it's going to be in the future.

For the record, I'm not saying the city SHOULD buy a bunch of that land for a park, but I think it's also incorrect to say that we already have enough parks. And if that greenspace does wind up being well-utilized for 5 years (or probably longer) before they build stuff on it, you can definitely count on "garment rending about the loss of open space," lol.
