2nd (West) at I, Looking South-Southwest (see more)

Today Forest City Washington is announcing another restaurant for the Lumber Shed at the Yards Park--the Navy Yard Oyster Company, a "wine-centric oyster bar," will be coming to the south side of the building, between Osteria Morini and Agua 301, with a target opening date of Spring 2015.
The venture is from August Paro and Elias Hengst, founders of Beuchert's Saloon and Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar on Capitol Hill.
The menu will feature oysters from Rappahannock and the Chesapeake Bay, along with other well-known oysteries. There will also be an "extensive by-the-glass wine list," and classic cocktails "featuring selections from the burgeoning local distiller movement." Ditto the beer menu. There will be lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch service.
The restaurant will occupy 1,887 square feet on the ground floor, but its two-story ceiling will be the exposed trusses of the Shed's roof. The announcement describes the expected ambiance as "low key, laid back elegance," but is also inspired by the building's ties to the Navy, the city, and the river.
The ownership group, in addition to Paro and Hengst, has members who have been involved in various ways in other local restaurants such as Tryst, The Diner, Mendocino Grill, and the upcoming Stanton.
There is now only one remaining restaurant unit available in the Shed, on the northwest corner, which may or may not have something in the works.
(Also snuck into the oyster bar announcement is the news that the Parcel N apartment building is going to be called Arris. Plus it gives "early August" as an expected opening date for TaKorean.)

Awesome! I think an oyster bar will be a great addition to the neighborhood, especially right there on the river. Can't wait!

perfect

JES says: (7/15/14 10:05 AM)
Not a huge oyster person, but I'm hopeful that they'll also have other kinds of seafood, as most oyster places do. Also, I've long thought that a wine bar type of establishment would do quite well on the waterfront, so this is gonna be nice. Only drawback is that their frontage is real skinny, so the patio will be teeny.

JD says: (7/15/14 10:20 AM)
@JES, me too on not being an oyster person. But I love Sonoma, so here's hoping I get to have some options. Mr. JDLand is thrilled, however.

JES says: (7/15/14 10:24 AM)
I mean, Hank's and Pearl Dive both have a decent non-oyster selection on their menus, so I'm sure non-oyster folk will still have options.

I've never been to Sonoma, but have heard good things. Will have to check it out.

Whatevs says: (7/15/14 11:39 AM)
Hopefully it's better than Sonoma. That place is over priced and over rated.

JD says: (7/15/14 11:44 AM)
You are just a little ray of sunshine on everything, Whatevs, aren't you?

Whatevs says: (7/15/14 2:26 PM)
I try to be balanced and keep things in perspective. Often times, people get caught up in the hoopla and really don't see mediocre things as mediocre when they really are mediocre. When something really warrants a WOW, I post accordingly.

JD says: (7/15/14 2:29 PM)
Good to know that you are the patron saint of mediocrity. We'll keep that in mind.

Whatevs says: (7/15/14 2:43 PM)
You're welcome! In a "new" neighborhood, somebody has to be up to the task.

Blue says: (7/15/14 9:43 PM)
For what it's worth, I really like Sonoma too. I've only ever had their cheese plates and wine, but every time I go there, it just seems really really special. I think they have the lighting down perfectly and that always makes a huge difference in terms of general feeling and ambience.

Gamble Rogers says: (7/15/14 10:58 PM)
@Whatevs

You understand that you're messin' with the patron saint of AWESOME on her own blog, right?

Tread carefully -- we all want JD to be happy and keep blogging! And if you don't, well, maybe you can go to Sonoma and while the night away in mediocrity.

JD says: (7/15/14 11:39 PM)
But not #awesome. Never #awesome.

(Though I'm not a delicate flower - it certainly doesn't have to be rainbows and unicorns all the time. But I never have much patience for trolling. The Picard .gif is always at the ready.)

Packinblackandred says: (7/16/14 8:59 AM)
This looks great for broadening the restaurant selection! Very happy with the development of the restaurant scene over the last year.

B in DC says: (7/16/14 12:48 PM)
JD, won't you get confused about whether the restaurant is in the actual Navy Yard complex or just nearby it? :)

JD says: (7/16/14 12:51 PM)
Only when legions of articles written about the place talk about how it is located in the Navy Yard.
