 Sliding from Before to After

The title of this post says it all (in other words, I am not in full blogging mode this week).
* PUMP IT UP: City Paper reports that DC Water is soliciting bids for the design of a new headquarters, which would move from Blue Plains to a new building atop the existing O Street Pumping Station. (NOT the beautiful Main Pumping Station just to the north!)
And, if one looks at the renderings that Forest City released during its quest for zoning approval to develop three blocks around the station, you can deduce that this idea did not crop up in the last few days. The rendering above shows the O Street station in the right foreground, and you can see how it does look similar to the description reported by City Paper: "[It] will have five stories of offices perched above the pumping station. The offices will be supported by columns; there may or may not be a small gap between them and the pumping station."
(Note that this is a separate issue from the stalled drive to move some of DC Water's operations before Forest City can start work on the proposed movie theater there.)
* THUMBS UP: The Zoning Commission has issued the final orders to allow veterinary hospitals in the Southeast Federal Center Overlay and for the Trapeze School to move to New Jersey and Tingey.
* BOTTOMS UP (OR NOT): An application for a Class C liquor license is now in the pipeline for the The Big Stick, the new restaurant coming later this year to 20 M Street, The application describes the venture thusly: "A sports bar featuring an alpine lodge theme and d├ęcor serving casual foods such as bratwursts, sausages and kielbasas, salads, sandwiches, wraps and crispy oven-baked macaroni and cheese. Occasional DJ. No nude performances."
That's all that's up with me. What's up with you?

I feel for the employees of Park Tavern if its demise is imminent. But for such a great year-round location, I'm sure an enterprising bar/restaurant concept could do well there. Besides, it wouldn't hurt the 'hood to change things a bit.

And I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, but it wouldn't hurt to have an experienced BBQ hand take over Willie's spot. Any takers?

Park Tavern is such an excellent location and yet it's just so blah. We used to pregame Nats games there last season, but now that Bluejacket, Agua, Nando's, etc are open this season, we just skip right over it. Last year when options were so limited, it was adequate, but now that you actually have to compete to land customers down here, I feel like it's not long for this world, absent a complete and total management change/menu overhaul/etc.

I hope the vet hospital is not Banfield (but I've heard rumors that it is). They are the worse place you can take your pet. Do not go there!

It looks like preliminary construction has started for 1111 NJ Ave. I saw a tractor on the site today and there was construction activity in front of the church.

No, that's not for the construction of 1111--I assume it's just to shut off the utilities before the church is razed. Still no building permits for the big building.

Random question for JD or others in the 'hood: have you noticed that the klaxon punctuating a Nationals homer or win seems much quieter this season?

In previous seasons, I could hear the klaxon with my windows open and know to look at the TV to see a coming home run or final out. Now the sub horn is so faint that I either hear the crowd or nothing from outside outside before seeing it on the tube.

Its too bad DC Water won't give up the main water pump building at N Place. I think it would serve the neighborhood better as tourist attraction, say a new National Aquarium, done in the spirit of the Inner Harbor one in Baltimore. If not there then at least move the aquarium to the SW Waterfront's new Wharf development. It should be near a revamped water location. Additionally, the main pump building would look nice having a dancing water element timed to music and lights outside it's southern side. What do others think?

It'd be nice if they'd give it up, but they have to pump crap somewhere (literally). If it has to be there anyway, better to build offices on top of it than just leave it as-is.

It's not like it's a regular office building. You can't just move billions of dollars worth of water and sewer infrastructure.

And given that water and sewage services are pretty important to all neighborhoods in the city; no, I do not think it would serve the neighborhood better to move it.
