A flyer just sent out by the Capitol Riverfront BID is announcing that Canal Park will have a two-day Grand Opening, on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17, kicking off with a ribbon cutting with the mayor and other dignitaries at 11 am on the 16th.
The park's much anticipated ice rink will be the center of attention for the rest of the festivities, and it will be open from noon to 9 pm on Friday and 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday--admission is $8 for adults and $7 for kids/seniors/military, with skate rentals costing $3. There will also be "ice performances" at the top of each hour from noon to 4 pm, and coaches available to help new skaters.
Saturday will also have live music in the park from 10 am to 3 pm, various art-y options, and a "Get Active" program from Results Gym with boot camp, a kids obstacle course, and a Zumba class.
Considering that it was nine years ago this month that I first wrote about the plans to remove the school buses from the park's three-block site along 2nd Street between I and M, SE, I'd say this opening indeed qualifies as a milestone in the neighborhood. (The BID also says that the management of Kruba Thai and Sushi says that their restaurant in the ground floor of the Foundry Lofts at the Yards is opening on Monday, Nov. 12. Will that come true as well? We shall see!)
UPDATE: I should add there's no word in this whether the Park Tavern restaurant will open on this same weekend--my guess is that the pressure is pretty strong to have it open in some format, but there's no announcement.

They were just having a walking through of some kind with the outdoor music pumping with the flashing lights on the south end of the rink in synch with the music. The inside of the restaurant looks great!
Can't wait to skate!

The Park Tavern twitter account (not sure who runs it...) says they'll be open same day as the rink -- but I'm meeting with the owner next week and will see if I can get confirmation.

(I'll put this in the comments, so just the real loyal readers see it :-) ) A longtime reader who was at the opening of the new Nando Peri-Peri in Alexandria tells me that a Nando rep told him that Nando is coming to "the neighborhood near the ballpark," "in a building with lots of glass by the Navy Yard," shooting for May 2013. Certainly sounds like the Boilermaker Shops to me.... But of course, 'tis but a rumor at this point.

There is also still the one other retail space in the Foundry Lofts, which could qualify as lots-of-glass (in comparison to other DC buildings, not in comparison to Boilermaker and the Shed :-) ).

Nandos...talk about a confused restaurant. They're all over London and are like a slightly fancy Boston Market with brutally mediocre sides and a price tag of a mid-range sit down restaurant. A wrap and not as good McDonald's fries is like 18 usd and takes 15 minutes to make...like they're surprised people are ordering chicken from the hours of 6 until 8. There are so many Peruvian chicken places that errrrinate on this place in the states...no clue what the market is.

As a London resident, the negative comments on this thread about Nandos is shocking as it is a staple of our city. Sounds a bit pretentious if you're too good for Nandos...

@NatsFan19: I'm guessing you were referring to my post. I was definitely exaggerating a bit and I do like the taste and concept of Nando's (even buy the sauces at the grocery store), but it is too expensive and the quality of the sides are inconsistent with the chicken. I'd be interested to hear the prices of the Nandos because I can't imagine a direct port of prices over to the States would fly. I'm a London resident as well and sadly things being unusually expensive is another staple of London...even compared to other major cities.

They've been spraying water manually to form the ice sheet for the last few days. I would imagine the ice resurfacer will be used in a day or so from it's shed on teh northern end of the ice sheet. Some workers already managed to break on pane of the glass surrounding the ice sheet. Hopefully they have extras.
