2nd (West) at H, Looking West (see more)

Construction continues at the Boilermaker Shops, the World War I industrial building at the Yards that Forest City is adapting into a retail and office space. And today I was able to see the interior for the first time since 2007, with camera in hand, of course.
None of the tenant spaces are looking like their final versions yet, but it's still cool to check out the bones before the spaces really get going with their installations. Though I sure wish it hadn't been pouring rain, to get a better sense of how much more natural light will come into these spaces when the sun is out. Next time....
The photo gallery shows the spaces where Bluejacket Brewery (above), Buzz Bakery, Willie's Brew and Que (below left), Huey's 24-7 Diner, and Wells Dry Cleaners will be, along with the office space being built out on a new second floor that runs along much of the interior of the building (below right) and some of the as-yet unleased sections.
The photos you see here are just a smattering, so be sure to check out the whole gallery.
It's too bad that the mondo-cool Shaw 15 Ton Crane left from the building's original incarnation is up in the office space, rather than somewhere in the public areas, but hopefully the office workers will take good care of it.
There are no official opening dates for any of the tenants, though it sounds like the dry cleaners will be the first to open (yay...?). Bluejacket has previously announced they are shooting for an early 2013 opening.

I also tossed in a photo of the hole in the ground where Twelve12 4th will be sprouting, to be home to apartments and Harris Teeter. I was told that they've dug as deep as they're going to go, and pile work is next on the agenda.
UPDATE: Also, I was going to grouse about why I don't take photos when the weather is bad by pointing to this batch I shot along L Street catching the homestretch progress at Capitol Quarter, but strangely enough most of the "before" shots aren't exactly under bright blue skies. Juggling a camera and an umbrella is not my cup of tea, though.

I can understand why they might only go that deep on the 1212 pit (I think the green line runs under there, doesn't it?). It looks like only one level of parking would fit down there. Splitting that between apartments and Teeter seems like a stretch. Maybe it looks bigger from down in the pit.

Looks awesome! I suppose the incoming food/drink establishments aren't in a rush to open up before Opening Day 2013, right? Nevertheless, it's thrilling to see some of the neighborhood's new buildings inch towards completion.

Even better news that they've stopped digging at Twelve12 4th! I was beginning to wonder how deep that building was going to go.

Maelstrom, I think that hole looks a bit deeper in person. Regardless, it just seemed like it took forever to dig just that much (probably because they had to be a little careful due to the possibility of munitions lying beneath the surface?). Also, the footprint of the building is pretty big, so I think there will probably be a decent amount of parking.

Forest city has been very successful with the foundry loft and they were able to fully lease it in a very short time. Why can't they just start construction on the Factory 202? People love the idea of converting an old warehouse in to loft and it is not that hard to sell it or rent it.

Thanks for the drawing David. It explains a lot, including why they are punching a hole in the wall on 4th street (for the private service drive). It's interesting how much of the wall they are keeping in the design. I wonder if they are going to take down and re-lay the wall/redo the sidewalk, considering the shape some parts of that block are in.

They will be retaining and preserving the wall, save for a couple of cut-outs for better circulation. It is considered "historic" (*ducks*) so for the most part it will stay in its current state and patched up. Good question about the sidewalk -- my guess is that at least the 4th Street side will be completely redone, but let me ask about the M Street side.

Tonight's ANC 6D agenda includes a presentation from Bluejacket. Might be a good chance to hear about their projected opening date, and to show your support for drinking (responsibly) in the neighborhood.

@Maelstrom -- the M Street sidewalks are not part of the Yards footprint, so will not be redone. But, the 4th Street ones will be widened and given the "Yards" treatment, like the sidewalks around Yards Park and Foundry Lofts.

@David - It's good to know that the 4th street one will be redone. It's kinda disappointing that M street will be left alone. The wall preservation work and the new openings in the walls will damage that sidewalk even further, and it's already pretty bad. At least it has marble curbs. Thanks for looking into it.

@Maelstrom, it is also highly likely that the M Street side would be redone as part of the M Street redesign -- the public process for which is happening now. Timeline isn't as fast, but will happen eventually.
