There's been a lot of positive news in the neighborhood of late, but news today from Canal Park will be disappointing to many residents and observers: Because of "major underground obstacles" that weren't found until workers started digging, the park's underground storm water system is having to be completely redesigned and then approved by DC Water.
According to Chris Vanarsdale of the Canal Park Development Association, this has bumped the schedule by about four months, and November 1 is now the expected completion date. (Just in time for ice skating!)
Canal Park is of course also where Xavier Cevera's Park Tavern restaurant is anticipated to open, which means that its opening would be pushed back as well.

I can't say I'm surprised, I've been observing the progress (or lack thereof) for the past couple weeks.

PJY03 says: (3/8/12 5:34 PM)
Shame, but this is the nature of the construction game. Honestly, construction delays don't concern me that much. Financing delays do. I'm disappointed, but will get over it. I would be surprised if the Boilermaker shops finish on time.

Considering how poorly run DC has been for the last 40-50 years, it's no surprise things are buried under the streets that nobody is aware of. This is a minor hiccup that I suspect several projects will encounter over the coming years of improvement.

ConsumerAdvocate says: (3/9/12 9:12 AM)
Inquiring minds want to know, just what was under the streets anyway?

Rahnod says: (3/9/12 10:16 AM)
Silver Lining....we won't expect much snow this year so at least we'll have ice skating by Christmas. There are always delays in construction and things happen that our out of control and I for one would rather have it done right or not done at all.

We'll be fine as long as the delay isn't because of....zombies.

TheYards said their rough estimate for Kruba is some time in latish June. I was hoping earlier.

The is heart-breaking news. When's Willie's BBQ supposed to be done?

JD says: (3/9/12 12:16 PM)
Xavier is saying fall for Willie's, but until you see fixtures going into a space, expected opening dates should be looked at very skeptically. As we've just seen.

G Street says: (3/9/12 2:32 PM)
That rendering of future restaurant / tavern is great -- it will be like Close Encounters of the Third Kind or Field of Dreams ... with people coming to stare at it. (-:

JD says: (3/9/12 2:36 PM)
Did someone say Close Encounters?

DAK4Blizzard says: (3/11/12 10:20 PM)
To me, the real surprise is that it's still targeted for completion THIS year. We'll see if it holds up.

B in DC says: (3/12/12 10:51 AM)
Speaking of construction delays, it's been like two weeks since anything has been done on the Harris Teeter lot. There was lots of action right at first, then suddenly nada. Hope it's nothing major!

MJM says: (3/12/12 2:21 PM)
UXOs were rumored to have been found there

B in DC says: (3/13/12 2:38 PM)
What's a UXO?

JD says: (3/13/12 2:40 PM)
Unexploded ordnance. There was one found a few months back (Navy Yard staff were alerted to it).
