Just sent out by DDOT:
"The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will hold the first in a series of public information meetings for the M Street SE/SW Transportation Study from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I Street SW.
"The nine-month study, being conducted as part of the larger Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, seeks to identify current and future transportation issues and possible mitigation strategies along the M Street SE/SW Corridor and Southwest/Southeast Waterfront areas from 12th Street SE west to 14th Street SW and from the Southwest/Southeast Freeway south to the Anacostia River/Washington Channel.
"The purpose of the public meeting is to provide an overview of the transportation study, outline the study process/schedule and gather public feedback."

9 months to figure out that the major issue w/ M Street SE/SW is that it's basically a freeway? i think we all figured that out in a lot less time!

cheap solution - make existing curb lane into permanent metered parking (no traffic) and add a bike lane. have 2 lanes of traffic in each direction plus dedicated left turn lanes with arrows at each intersection. problem solved... or at least mitigated.

Shrinking M Street to four lanes of through traffic was not especially well received by residents of SW when brought up at the "Complete Streets" meeting in 2010: link

If they fix the timing of the lights along M St SW (especially near DE Ave) and get people to stop blocking the South Cap / M St intersection area would help with the SW issues.

But then again the I-695/I-295 connection might help pull traffic off M St.

I actually think the best thing they could do is start enforcing don't block the box. This is a CHRONIC problem along South Capitol, with people regularly entering and blocking the intersection when the light is yellow or red.

Although I also think it's a waste to conduct much of this study until after the 11th street bridge project (and new connections to/from 295) is completed, as this could majorly change traffic patterns. A lot of the traffic on M street is cut through traffic avoiding the South Capitol / Southeast Freeway gridlock...

JD - good point, i always forget about the little quadrant that could. now that i thought about it a little more, my comment pertains to just the SE portion of M.
