Page Through from Before to After
With raze permits for the old structures along 1st Street SE between K and L finally approved in mid-June, the days were truly numbered for the Market Deli and its neighbors, and today the demolition got underway, with most of the rear section of the Deli's structure knocked in. Fences are up all around the 1st Street structures, which are all owned by Akridge, and with this initial wrecking underway I imagine it won't be long until the five buildings are added to my Demolished Buildings Gallery, as entries 161 through 165. There's a few more images here, showing that the demolition isn't quite so obvious from 1st Street (yet). Also, hopefully the folks who have been tending to the cats living in the abandoned building can report in as to their fate. (I heard a rumor that some kittens were removed today, but would defer to an update from anyone with more knowledge. UPDATE: In the comments of another post, reader jenniferp says that five very young kittens were indeed captured this morning, but there are several more still on the loose.) And, if you haven't been following along on the tale of the Market Deli for the past few years, here's some enlightenment. And, because it would have been silly to wander down there in the ghastly heat and humidity and walk past a whole lot of spots where I needed to take updated photos, you can see the latest progress at 225 Virginia (aka 200 I Street) and the second phase of Capitol Quarter, where framing is being completed on the last portion of its first block, along Fourth Street.

I can further report on the Market Deli cats for those who are interested. Apparently the foreman yesterday noticed all the cat bowls and such and decided to do a little investigating before he started with the bulldozer. By the time my panicked, co-crazy cat lady friend arrived he already had five in a box. They searched for some more and he let her set out traps that she was able to get from the Spay Neuter Clinic. We ended up getting another four kittens and one of the Mama's (currently getting spayed). The other mama we had fixed previously (luckily the only of the last bunch that I ended up releasing since we didn't know she had newborn kittens at the time). We think there is one kitten missing. There is still one unfixed male (Papa, we believe) we have not been able to catch. The other two, other Mama and the old one-eyed male cat have been fixed and will probably end up somewhere close by. I currently have seven of the kittens and we will adopt/foster them out. They are adorable babies, we've estimated one litter is five weeks old and the other is seven. Most seem to be males and given the probable era of their old home I'm naming them after Civil War generals. One litter from the North and the other the South. Open to suggestions.

jenniferp,
Thanks to you and your friend (and anyone else involved) for caring for the Market cats! We just weaned our youngest cat off of kitten food and have some extra dry Purina Kitten Chow and would like to give it to you if you think you could use it. Let me know and thanks again for all of your hard work!

Thanks, that would be great. Let me know how to get it from you. We did catch the last adult last night. Papa is now at the clinic getting snipped, unfortunately for him ending his days as a swinging ladies man. All of the Market Deli cats are now accounted for and spayed/neutered except for maybe one kitten that might be with her mother who we fixed earlier. Interestingly enough, females can still nurse right after they've been spayed and keep producing milk.
I also hear they hit a gas line and had a fire last night over there.

I am new to this site and wanted to add that I saw several kittens in the parking lot of the elementary school. They were under one of the large storage containers. I'm not sure if they were also "tenants" in the demolished buildings.
