Van at N, Looking Southeast (see more)

I haven't been there myself, but readers are reporting via Twitter and Facebook that Harry's Reserve Fine Wine and Spirits is now open for business on the southwest corner of New Jersey and I, in the ground floor of 909 New Jersey. It's been almost 10 months since the owners first signed a lease and started the liquor license process, but it's now the neighborhood's first outlet for the hard stuff in a number of years. It's also the first retail space at 909 New Jersey to be occupied, and the first new retail offering in Near Southeast since Justin's Cafe opened last April.
This is apparently a bit of a soft opening (so be gentle!), with a true "Grand Opening" coming in two weeks or so. The owners are the same folks who own Capitol Hill Wine and Spirits in the 300 block of Pennsylvania Ave., SE, and who owned the Harry's liquor store in the old Waterside Mall in SW. When the owners met with ANC 6D's ABC subcommittee, they indicated that "they would sell beer, wine, and liquor, as well as milk, sodas, juice, cheese, and other "quick stop" items, and are very much wanting to emphasize that this is going to be a 'community' store, with higher-end products, wine tastings, and other offerings beyond what people normally think of when they hear 'liquor store.'"
I will get down there myself to check it out if the rain ever stops, but if you've paid a visit, let us know in the comments what's on the shelves and any other impressions.

It's really nice, people. If you haven't been, you should visit, if only to meet some of the first people willing to open a business in our 'hood.

Large space, great selection. They mentioned something about a tasting happening in the next few days as well.

Beer: the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

(My absolute favorite Homerism!)

Great beer selection....pretty pumped about this place

Nice layout and selection. I just popped in for a second, but was impressed.

Anyone notice if they have a selection of the larger single Belgian beers (e.g., Lambics)? I recall something about not being able to sell singles due to DC law but wasn't sure if these kinds of beers fell into that ban.

Nice selection of beer. Bought some New Castle. Friendly staff!

JD - I'm dying to know, did you click my link or did we just have the same (great) idea at approximately the same time this morning?!?!?

JD says: (3/11/11 5:07 PM)
Hah, Bill, I figured your link was to Homer saying "Mmmmm, beer," and so I didn't follow it, but it reminded me of the quote. So, you get the credit, in a roundabout way!

Just made my first visit and was very pleasantly pleased with the store. The prices are a bit higher then you can find elsewhere, but the mark-up is very reasonable and expected for the convenience. They have a good bourbon selection (Mmmmmm...Basil Hayden's), plus a reasonable selection of wine and beer.

My only disappointment was that they did not have much in the way of food-stuffs originally promised. Hopefully they will come in time.

One final note, please do not forget about Cornercopia's wine and beer selection. They have been great neighbors and provided a good (albeit limited) source of beer and wine until now!!!

Agree with all above... it's a really nice, large space with a huge selection (including an especially large selection of beer). I didn't think the prices were all that much higher than elsewhere. The only food-ish stuff I saw when I went in was of the small-bags-of-chips and fridge-of-soda variety, but I think they're planning for more (cheeses, breads, etc.) to come in time.
