Two very small items to start off the week:
* The BID has posted a survey to find out which movies people are interested in seeing during the summer's Outdoor Movie Series, scheduled for Thursday nights beginning May 26. (The movies have moved back to Tingey Plaza behind USDOT, since Canal Park will presumably be under construction.) They're offering two themes to choose between: Summer Vacation Movies and Academy Award Winners.
* StonebridgeCarras has e-mailed invitations to VIPs (a list that doesn't include moi) announcing a "ceremony to celebrate the official beginning of the redevelopment" of the former Post Plant, aka 225 Virginia Avenue, aka 200 I St., SE. It's scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 10:30 am at the corner of 3rd and Virginia, with Mayor Gray and other luminaries expected to be in attendance. Will the Bobcats now parked on site then start punching out the walls from the inside, as was the case when the old Capper Seniors building was demolished? Of course, in the case of the Post Plant, they're only "de-skinning" it, not bringing down the entire building. You can see a rendering of the new building on my project page.

How come the building 225 Virginia avenue doesn't have any windows? It is creepy and it always freaks me out.
My dog is scared of that building. It looks like a haunted building.

Mike, that won't be the case for long, it'll have lots and lots of windows when it gets its new skin. It was a printing plant for most of its life, and didn't need windows. Though it was the HQ for the old Washington Star, and so the ink-stained wretches (i.e., reporters and editors) also worked in that building until the Star went under in 1981, after which the Post bought it to be a printing plant (along with the presses that the Post used to have at the main offices on 15th Street).

BID's "survey" seems pretty skewed toward a specific result.

Movies can't be rated R and must be within a 2 hr timeframe... Your options are "Summer Vacation Movies!" Yippie! Vapid, hollow fun! Vote for me! Vote for me! And Oscar winners... (You can practically hear the boos and hissing from the BID)

Why do i say that? Simply, the Oscar winners are set up to fail.

Every best picture winner since 1973 (The Godfather) has been over 3h -- and that one was still 2h+. And it falls afoul of the BID's other rule about rating: No R movies. Kiddies musn't hear bad words or see boobs. Parents will freak. And, the sad thing is, they absolutely have a legitimate point in this coddled and swaddled society.

Either rule alone rules out much of the list, which is too bad because these are some great, great movies.

I dunno, maybe this is just the AndrewinDC-with-no-kids speaking but sometimes I wonder how far away from 1620 and Plymouth Rock do we have to get for the Puritans to stop winning...

@Andrew in DC - thought the same thing and then boring came to mind. Can't think of too many non-boring non-R rated movies that fit into that theme but as I suggested in the survey - the BID should get the edited versions of the R-rated movies - e.g. National Lampoon or Little Miss Sunshine have been on TV and would be nice to see on the green.
