Page Through from Before to After

It's becoming a Friday tradition (think of it like the magazine that comes in your weekend paper) -- my father has sent along another batch of memories of living on Capitol Hill, during the Kennedy years of 1961 to 1963. He even briefly mentions Near Southeast (mainly to say they hardly ever ventured south of Virginia Avenue), as well as lots of other landmarks of the city at the time, like the Marine Barracks, the beer garden at Griffith Stadium, biking to DC Stadium to see the Redskins, and the various places in Maryland and Virginia that he bowled. (Bowling was very big at the time, and a good way to meet chicks, as he explains. One bowling beauty in particular caught his eye.)
There was also touch football, which of course was practically a requirement during the Kennedy era (and I've added a home movie clip to make this a true multimedia offering). He also talks about the old Oakland Inn just over the line in Maryland, famous for its fried chicken and to which I even remember being taken once when I was probably in junior high.
And, sadly, as with any memories of the era, it includes the events of Nov. 22, 1963.
I just can't help but picture the cast of Mad Men as I read all of these! I'm passing the comments that people have sent back to Dad (and I think he's peeking in as well), so thanks for the continued indulgence--I think it's a nice little side project during the less newsy winter months. And it's especially nice for me since I don't have to do the writing. Or pay him. :-)

Thanks for an excellent post. First hand memories such as yours are an invaluable and greatly needed resource by which the history of our neighborhood, our Capitol, as well as our great nation is documented for many future generations so that many future may understand what life was like before our time, the changes that have occured since those times, and where we are headed today. Your memories stand to serve as a reminder that understanding our past is just as importnat as dreaming of our future. I have often found myself reflecting and wondering about what were the things that I see today like 40, 50, 60 100 years ago. Voices such as yours help me to have a better understanding, a clearer picture to place the "now" with the "then". Thank you for your time, your insight and I look forward to more of your posts.

When the houses were torn down to build the Library Annex, was that known as Carrol Street that no longer exists. My father-in-law is 91 and lives with us. He grew up in a rowhouse on Carrol Street and doesn't remember a lot but tells us facts now and then that are quite interesting about life in that neighborhood, like people sleeping on the Capitol grounds in the summer since no one had air conditioning. In addition, the junior high, I think its Heinz. that he attended is still there.

I couldn't pass the "box test" with my first comment. I wrote how wonderful your blog is. Your descriptions brought back again so many Capital Hill landmarks. I think Dad brought us to the Chicken Shack when Andrew was a baby. Imagine how the area has changed. Pentagon City as bowling alleys.

(It should be noted that Sally worked with my dad ["Mr. Dupree, sir"] in her father's congressional office during these years...)

Not a DC resident, but a great fan of historic preservation and of the Duprees. Loved the photo of wedding reception at Library Court, the home of my best friend, Shirley W., I see where Jamie and JD got their journalistic and authorship genes. I love reminiscences of our great country.

JD, these stories by your dad and home movies are great little time capsules of the area. Please wish your dad well and from this reade.

Thanks for sharing

Ed
