Page Through from Before to After

Seeing in the city's public records feeds that three building permits have been issued for the blocks encompassing Canal Park, I checked in with Chris vanArsdale at the park's development association for an update, and he says that they are "planning to begin major construction by mid-February." With the previously announced timeline of 12 to 14 months from start to completion, this would put the park's opening into late winter or early spring 2012.
(The wording of the permits might be of interest as well--the two northern blocks are described as "construction of a new park on a vacant lot to include site grading sediment control storm water management and construction of pavilions," while the southern block, at 2nd and M, adds "and construction of an ice rink main pavilion landscape and water fountain." (They aren't big on punctuation in these things.)

This has been a long time coming. Since this park will be visible to a lot of people coming and going through our neighborhood (Yards Park is great, but you actually have to go look for it to see it), I can see Canal Park being a catalyst for more interest being generated in the Capitol Riverfront (Office,Retail and Housing). Feb 2012 will be big for the Capitol Riverfront!

2012 is also the time CSX has planned to start their tunnel project cutting us off from the rest of the city even more. Two steps forward and then one step back all in one year. Great.

The role of Debby Downer will apparently be played by a dude named Rob. Wha Wha Wha Whaaaaaaa.

Part of this neighborhood's charm is the fact that it is literally on the wrong side of the tracks.

This is great news on the park!

You may pay for it twice. Contractors will not care if the park is restored. They will only do the minimum maintenance (on their site) needed to get paid. The 11th street bridge is not scheduled to be completed until 2013. Homeless people may end up living in the park. A proposed plan may be to first demolish and level ALL “Project Property”, place all utilities underground and then leave the property partially unfinished until all construction contracts are complete. Then towards the end of the Project award a specific contract to finish (ex: park restoration, signs and signals, sidewalks, asphalt, etc.) all of the property at one time. Are pictures of December 2010 available to compare against June 2008/2009?

MJM says: (1/17/11 4:11 PM)
@wrangler - Are you saying CSX is gonna run through Canal Park? Not sure what you are writing talking about since there haven't been train tracks across the old Washington City Canal or Canal Park since at least 1887. And CSX is nowhere near Canal park unless you mean Va Ave Park where homeless people already live.

wrangler says: (1/18/11 6:31 PM)
@MJM - Canal Park is in the middle of JD Lands Anacostia Initiative Project borders of: the river, S. Capital & 395. M Street is an 11th Street Bridge contract access road and borders Canal Park. JD Land’s photos show exposed power lines. Modern Tech puts them underground. Does JD Land have up-to-date project photos showing the area for 2-3 blocks outside the park area? Homeless – a new place is better then an old place, even if it just a park.

@wrangler, I'm not sure you're thinking about the correct Canal Park. Canal Park (of which I have pretty up-to-date pictures here: link ) is the spot where the schoolbuses used to be, on Second Street, SE, between I and M. Just south of the Post plant. It's not anywhere near the 11th Street Bridges. And there's no "project property" to demolish, the three blocks were cleared in 2009 when the schoolbuses were driven away.

MJM says: (1/18/11 11:37 PM)
@ wrangler - that's what she said :)

Little tidbit - if you do a google map search of "Near Southeast Washington DC" it will place the little red pin right on Canal Park.

Little history lesson ( link on the canal in addition to JD's piece on her page

JD says: (1/19/11 9:05 AM)
He can do that Google Maps search, or he can just look at the map on this page where it says "Canal Park" right in the middle. :-)

@JD&MJM - I am thinking of the same park. The most up-to-date photos on the link are Aug 2010. Others are either 18 months old or drawings of what the city hopes the area will look like someday. I stated that the Park at 2nd Street and M Street is “ON ROUTE” to the 11th Street Bridge construction contract. The Anacostia Waterway Initiative Project is shown as between the river and the SE/SW freeway. What do people in the area think about the city building a multi-level parking garage somewhere in the middle of the neighborhood and removing some parking lots to create park larger then just three blocks.….Time will tell?

mikescorpio says: (1/21/11 11:23 AM)
Will be glad to see something started at Canal Park.
Wrangler, I don't think there is anything in the master plan to build a stand alone multi level parking garage anywhere in the neighborhood The exception to that may be to add a parking deck to the old Post plant to accommodate workers and visitors of the future tenants. The existing parking lots to the east of Canal Park are slotted for future mixed income housing, and cannot be changed. If you're trying to state progress is slow and once started, may not go smoothly, there won't be any argument from anyone about that. On a positive note, once done, Canal Park will be fabulous.

Cheers!
